AJ Lee shocked the world by defeating “The Man” Becky Lynch for the Women’s WWE Intercontinental Championship. Elimination Chamber: Chicago wrapped up Saturday night, leaving no more stops on the road to WrestleMania. Along with the dangerous chamber matches, there were two championship bouts on the card. Her husband, CM Punk, retained the World Heavyweight Championship against Finn Balor, and the couple celebrated their pair of titles together. An out-of-his-prime Punk carrying the strap is one thing, but dropping to someone who hasn’t had a singles match since 2015 is a whole other can of worms.

AJ Lee Buildup

Lee and Punk had a small rivalry with Lynch and Seth Rollins, which is supposedly how they quantify the booking. The pool of the story is shallow, with just a single tag match back in September to reference. There’s plenty of hungry, full-time talent that would benefit from a title run. Instead, the WWE Universe is fed a nostalgia bomb and is convinced that it’s championship-caliber.

AJ Lee Vs. Becky Lynch

The occasion had no match or storyline build-up, and it didn’t even deliver an entertaining or impressive match. This is not to take away from her fitness, but the movements were slow, and the move set looked soft. They tried to protect her by providing drama with the knocked-out referee, but the kitty didn’t scoop enough litter to cover the stink.

No match, no logic, not even an impressive promo leading up to such a monumental title drop. Fans can only hope the company shifts the championship toward the talent post WrestleMania, as they’ve been wasting it on tacky storylines since its inception.

End Of My AJ Lee Rant

It may be presumptuous, but it’s only a matter of who she drops the title to at WrestleMania. Will WWE recycle Lynch in the picture once more, or could it finally be used as a path to greatness for up-and-coming talent?
