AJ Styles and WWE 'Discussed' New Contract
WWE

AJ Styles was reportedly in discussions with WWE to extend his contract before retiring at the Royal Rumble on January 31st. The Phenomenal One lost to Gunther after putting his career on the line in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The 48-year-old announced last year that he intended to retire in 2026, although he didn't give an official date. It became known that Styles' contract was set to expire just after the Rumble and he opted to end his career at the PLE.

AJ Styles Nearly Extended WWE Deal

Styles' future in wrestling is uncertain, despite indications that he has called time on his legendary career. He bid farewell to fans in Riyadh after his loss to Gunther but decided not to leave his gloves in the ring.

A report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider has now revealed that Styles discussed a new deal with WWE ahead of the Rumble, but a decision was made to go with the Gunther match. Both parties are discussing his future with the company, although there's no sign that a new deal is on the cards.

Styles is free to listen to offers from other promotions when his current deal expires, and there has been speculation that he might join AEW. Reports claim that AEW would make an offer for the legendary wrestler if he were open to continuing his career.

That said, Johnson claims that there have been no rumblings about Styles seeking to return to the ring anytime in the near future. When he spoke to Stephanie McMahon days after his retirement match, he said "never say never" when asked why he didn't leave his gloves in the ring at the Rumble.

Why WWE Should Use AJ Styles Behind The Scenes

Styles might not be willing to continue his in-ring career, but that doesn't mean he can't still contribute to the company and help shape its future. He worked with several young stars before his loss to Gunther, including teaming with Dragon Lee, 30, and battling the likes of Je'Von Evans, 21, and Leon Slater, 21.

A potential backstage role as a talent scout or even as a producer could suit Styles if he isn't forced to be on the road on a full-time schedule. He seems eager to focus on his family, but a flexible role which allows WWE to use his knowledge and experience could be extremely beneficial.

Styles spent a decade with WWE as an in-ring performer and became a two-time world champion. He is destined for the Hall of Fame and might even get a TNA Hall of Fame induction given his legendary career in the promotion that are in partnership with WWE.
