AJ Styles appeared on TNA's debut on the AMC Network, and that might not be the last time the WWE star appears in his former promotion before retiring. The Phenomenal One opened last night's episode of Impact and made clear that TNA was the "house he built"
The 48-year-old's night didn't end there, though, as he got into an exchange with Frankie Kazarian in a backstage segment. He hinted at coming after the TNA World Championship, which Kazarian lost to Mike Santana in the main event.
Styles' last match in TNA came back in January 2014, and he's been with WWE since 2016. He is set to retire at some point this year, although an official date has yet to be confirmed.
According to Bodyslam.net, many within WWE believe Styles will wrestle again in TNA before he calls time on his career. This is aided by WWE's partnership with TNA, which has led to many wrestlers from both promotions crossing over.
The 48-year-old is one of the biggest stars in TNA's history, winning the TNA World Championship twice. His appearance on last night's show suggested he has plans to target that title again before bidding farewell to professional wrestling.
If Styles only has one match back in TNA, the signs point towards him either facing former rival and friend Kazarian or chasing the TNA World Championship. That would mean he challenges Santana as things stand, although there's no indication of when to expect him to reappear in the promotion.
But the one match that must happen before Styles retires is to have the Phenomenal One go up against TNA X-Division Champion Leon Slater. The 21-year-old is one of the most exciting talents in pro wrestling and has already been showcased to a WWE audience.
Slater teamed with new WWE RAW star Je'Von Evans against Styles and Dragon Lee at Saturday Night's Main Event in December. He was on the losing side but caught the eye with several impressive spots in that match.
Styles could bow out by putting Slater over, and the pair are two of the most captivating high-flyers in the business. A match between the pair would also please WWE, given that the Brit is on WWE's radar with his contract expiring this year.
The TNA legend previously hailed Slater when appearing on Impact last year and the X-Division Champion hoped that Styles would challenge him ahead of the AMC Network debut. It would be a perfect send-off for the Phenomenal One.
