While still a largely male-dominated industry, women in professional wrestling have made several historical strides in recent years.
Once viewed as a sideshow to the main event, women's wrestling in WWE has since established itself as must-see television. During an appearance Monday on ESPN’s "First Take" , WWE star Bianca Belair assessed the current state of WWE’s women’s division, which she believes is in peak form.
“We are at the top of our game,” Belair said. “We’ve had so many women that have come before us that have been trailblazers. They have laid the foundation so that we’ve been able to walk in to do what we’re doing right now. We are main-eventing WrestleManias, we are main-eventing Raw [and] SmackDowns. We’re stealing the show."
Despite the growth in popularity of the WWE women's division, Belair doesn't believe female superstars had to reinvent the wheel to generate fan interest. Instead, the three-time women's champion stated that the division is maximizing the opportunities afforded them.
“People have asked so many times what more do women need to do,” she continued. “We don’t need to do anything more; we just need those opportunities. We’re getting those opportunities now, and we’re showing up and we’re showing out. We’re stealing the show. Now you have amazing storylines going into WrestleMania where people are talking about the women. We are putting on amazing matches. It’s not just ‘Oh that was a great match for a woman.’ No, that’s just a great match. People are wanting these matches from us.”
In 2019, Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair headlined WrestleMania 35, becoming the first women's main event in show history.
Last year, they made history once more, as Belair and Rhea Ripley were featured on the first women-exclusive cover of the WWE 2K video game series.
So far this year, Belair has carried that momentum to push the women's division even further into the spotlight.
Belair, 35, is among the best in-ring performers in WWE and is equally impressive on the microphone. Following her gritty win at Elimination Chamber in February, Belair became the first women's superstar to win an Elimination Chamber match twice. The gutsy victory also earned the Tennessee native a championship match at WrestleMania 41.
Currently, WWE is building toward two WrestleMania 41 matches involving the women's division. Firstly, Belair is in line to challenge Iyo Sky for the WWE Women’s World Championship. The stacked WrestleMania 41 card will also feature Tiffany Stratton's WWE Women’s Championship title defense match against Charlotte Flair, the 2025 Women’s Royal Rumble winner.
“Representation means everything to me," Belair told Good Karma Wrestling. "I always use the quote, ‘Representation is not a request, it’s a requirement.’ I think that’s what’s amazing about WWE is that when you look at our roster, anybody can watch WWE and see somebody that they relate to, anyone. It’s multi-generational, it’s people from all different cultures, people from all over the world, but representation is so important.
"So that’s what I love about WWE. I love that I’ve been able to be a part of a lot of amazing moments, making history by being one of the first Black women to main event WrestleMania, make history, become history myself and create a legacy. But I love being a part of all these amazing moments, and I look forward to continuing to be a part of some amazing moments and continue to be a part of representation and show that in WWE."
