One week after WWE icon Hulk Hogan’s death from a heart attack, Florida will be honoring his legacy.

Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, is a Florida native who lived in Clearwater until his death July 24 at age 71. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared Friday, Aug. 1, will be Hulk Hogan Day in his memory.

DeSantis ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff. “Rest in peace, brother,” the governor wrote on X.

The order will apply to state buildings and Hogan’s hometown of Pinellas County.

“Hogan was born in Augusta, Georgia, but moved to Tampa at a young age,” the proclamation reads. “He began his wrestling career in 1977 and rose to fame after joining WWE. Hogan was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame twice, first in 2005 and again in 2020 as a member of the New World Order.

“His larger-than-life personality will be missed, as the 'Hulkster' was an icon for many who grew up in the '80s and '90s, as well as today. He was a true Floridian through and through.”

Hogan’s Wrestling Career Began in Florida

At a young age, Hogan impressed wrestling legends Jack Brisco and Gerald Brisco with his muscular physique. The brothers introduced Hogan to professional wrestler Hiro Matsuda, who worked with Championship Wrestling from Florida (CWF).

Hogan made his professional wrestling debut on Aug. 10, 1977, in a one-on-one match against Brian Blair in Fort Myers, Florida. He later began wearing a mask and called himself “The Super Destroyer."

During the early days of his career, he also opened a gym alongside close friend Whitey Bridges, known as Whitey and Terry’s Olympic gym. Hogan later compiled an impressive resume by winning 12 world titles, split between his time in WWE and WCW.

He showcased his strength against the Undertaker, Randy Savage, Ric Flair, Mr Perfect, Yokozuna, Andre the Giant, Shawn Michaels and Randy Orton.
