Booker T speaks out on 'next Shawn Michaels' getting lost in AEW's deep roster

Adam Cole started his wrestling career on the indie scene. He first rose to prominence during his eight years with Ring of Honor from 2009-17. However, it wasn't until he joined WWE's NXT that he began to make a name for himself among the wider wrestling fanbase.

Cole was part of "The Undisputed Era" on NXT, and his debut came via an attack on Drew McIntyre, who has since become a major star for the company. Throughout his tenure with the wrestling juggernaut, Cole projected to have a bright future, but he eventually opted to allow his contract to expire before signing with Tony Khan's AEW.

During a recent episode of his "Hall of Fame" podcast, Booker T shared his thoughts on Cole, and how his career has stalled since making the jump to the challenger brand. He pointed toward the recent success of Ethan Page as proof that its easy to get lost in AEW's bloated roster.

“Ethan Page in AEW, he really wasn’t that relevant, and then coming to ‘NXT,’ man, the guy, he’s a star. I mean everybody knows Ethan Page right now, he’s a guy that’s doing a hell of a job. Then you’ve got guys who, let’s just say, for instance, Adam Cole. Adam Cole in WWE, in ‘NXT,’ he was super, super hot. I mean I had touted this guy as being the next Shawn Michaels. That’s what I said, I said that, and then he goes to AEW, gets lost in the shuffle, really don’t hear a whole lot from him.”

Cole hasn't been an active wrestler on AEW's roster since September 2023, when he broke his ankle while running to help MJF during a match against Samoa Joe. He has participated in some on-screen promo segments for 'The Undisputed Kingdom' at times, but even then, they have been few and far between. Still, before his injury, Cole was establishing himself as one of the top names on Khan's roster. His storyline with MJF was one of the best stories AEW has told and captivated fans worldwide.

However, Khan has continued to sign new talent in Cole's absence. Will Ospreay, Ricochet and Kazuchika Okada have all joined the company since he's been on the sidelines. As such, Cole will have an even bigger mountain to climb once he's cleared to return to the ring.

If Cole doesn't get the opportunity to re-establish himself as a leading name with AEW, he may be better served returning to the WWE once his current contract expires. Multiple wrestlers have recently made that jump, including Andrade, Page and Jade Cargill, and they all appear to be enjoying fair success. There's no reason why Cole couldn't be the next in line.
