Paul Heyman changed the wrestling industry by moving forward with ECW as his passion project to shake up the landscape. WWE and WCW were the only top major promotions getting attention, but the excitement and innovation helped make ECW stand out as a great option for diehard fans.
Hardcore matches and more adult-themed storytelling made it feel like ECW offered something that fans couldn’t get elsewhere. WWE did try to actually book an ECW dream card for the first One Night Stand PPV, but many talents working for TNA or elsewhere got snubbed. The perfect ECW dream card would have matches paying tribute to the characters, stories, and feuds that made it so special.
Everyone talks about the violent level of matches in ECW since no other promotion had hardcore wrestling in the way they featured it. However, technical wrestling was also a major part of ECW, with many great wrestlers having in-ring classics.
Lance Storm and Jerry Lynn were among the biggest success stories of great workers getting over by having strong matches in ECW. The opening match would feature these two tearing it up and having the fans eating up all the exchanges and reversals. Lynn gets the victory in a competitive match.
Winner: Jerry Lynn
The rivalry between Mike Awesome and Masato Tanaka became a huge part of ECW after their savvy fans watched the two face off in Japan. Both wrestlers started around the same time and got over as main event acts having violent matches.
Awesome and Tanaka gave each other some of the most vicious chair shots and made the table the most beloved weapon. Any objective look back at ECW history has to feature these two since they tore it up every time they had a chance to face off.
Winner: Mike Awesome
The original ECW One Night Stand run by WWE had some perfect matches like this one. Super Crazy, Tajiri, and Little Guido developed a strong rivalry via triple threat matches and various singles matches involving the three.
ECW allowed them to showcase the classic cruiserweight style of fast-paced action in front of a hot crowd. Tajiri became the biggest star of the three and deserves the win after he got over with a unique character and in-ring presence.
Winner: Tajiri
Most ECW stars were names that struggled to get over or find success in other larger promotions. Cactus Jack and Terry Funk helped legitimize ECW as two respected performers that got over in bigger companies.
Mick Foley got his first chance to cut strong promos and improve his character work as a heel. ECW fans loved Funk as the aging hero having one more run that was showing a new side. A barbed wire massacre match would pay tribute to their Japan past, with Funk winning.
Winner: Terry Funk
ECW had an underrated tag team division, but only a handful of duos felt like true top attractions. The Dudley Boyz and The Eliminators are two of the most respected tandems that helped make the ECW Tag Team Championship feel important
Public Enemy are the snubbed team here, but they also had a shorter run before leaving for WCW. The rematch from Barely Legal 1997 would see the Dudley Boyz scoring the victory as a decorated tag team respected for their tag title reigns on a historical level.
Winner: The Dudley Boyz
The Sandman, Tommy Dreamer, and Raven all had personal feuds with each other that proved ECW was a storytelling promotion. All three were similar performers known for having main event runs that focused on hardcore matches and character-based storytelling.
Dreamer played a face against both, with each story playing a role in ECW fans earning respect for him. Sandman and Raven had an even more personal feud involving Sandman’s family. A triple threat match would be perfect, with Dreamer getting the victory here as the fan favorite who endured the most losses of the three.
Winner: Tommy Dreamer
Shane Douglas and Taz are the two names that fans most associated with the ECW Championship. Paul Heyman made Douglas his top heel, which led to Taz and many other faces chasing him from the babyface role.
Taz represented what fans loved about ECW as an ass kicker that never backed down, despite being shorter than most opponents. A dream card would have to see Taz leaving as the ECW Champion in the semi-main event.
Winner: Taz
Today’s fans may question why a midcard title would main event over a world title, but ECW fans who followed Rob Van Dam’s Television Championship reign will understand it. Van Dam became the hottest star in the company and made his title feel like the top prize to the fans.
Sabu was RVD’s greatest tag partner and a strong rival in ECW to have their history aligned as real-life best friends. Both innovative wrestlers deserve the main event spot for their contributions, most defining what ECW represented to the fan base.
Winner: Rob Van Dam
