For as long as wrestling has been popular, one of its most enduring tropes is the tag team match forcing rivals to answer one question: Can they coexist? This idea has been used repeatedly, with one recent example coming from All Elite Wrestling where AEW World Champion MJF and Adam Cole, known as “Better Than You Bay Bay,” won over fans as an unlikely but successful duo.
While many makeshift tag teams arise from creative impasses, the pairing of Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns feels different. Following their highly anticipated rematch at WrestleMania 40 for the Universal Championship, Rhodes and Reigns went in opposite directions. Rhodes, now carrying the weight of WWE as its top champion, defended his title against all comers. Meanwhile, Reigns took an extended break after nearly four years atop the WWE mountain.
During Reigns' absence, an unexpected common enemy united the two megastars: Solo Sikoa. Following Reigns' loss, Sikoa took control of the Bloodline, declaring himself the new Tribal Chief. This power grab shocked Reigns' former Wiseman, Paul Heyman, who was brutally ousted by Sikoa and his new allies — Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa and Jacob Fatu. Sikoa then challenged Rhodes for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam, but lost, thanks to interference from a returning Reigns.
On last week’s SmackDown debut on the USA Network, Sikoa faced Rhodes again in a steel cage for the title. Following Rhodes' win and the Bloodline's subsequent attack, Reigns showed up to clean house, sharing an intense staredown with Fatu before the Bloodline retreated. In a dramatic announcement later in the show, Reigns revealed that for one night only, he would team up with Rhodes to face Sikoa and Fatu in a tag-team match at Bad Blood on Oct. 5.

The announcement sent shockwaves through the wrestling world. Though it’s not unusual for top stars to team up in WWE, such as Triple H and Steve Austin's "Two Man Power Trip" in 2001 or Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage’s "Mega Powers" in the 1980s, it’s rare to see two main-eventers team up while still visibly detesting one another. Reigns’ handshake with Rhodes told the story of a man dissatisfied with his own current state — but determined to take down a greater evil. Rhodes, having suffered at Reigns’ hands for years, doesn't seem to relish the partnership, either, but knows what he must do to defeat Sikoa once and for all.
This storyline also raises questions about how Rhodes' allies, particularly Kevin Owens, will feel. Owens has been one of Reigns' fiercest rivals since Reigns' title run began in 2020. Rhodes played a crucial role in convincing Owens to forgive Sami Zayn in 2023, leading to the duo defeating Reigns' then-allies the Usos for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania 39. With tensions between Rhodes and Owens already brewing — evidenced by their match at Bash in Berlin — Owens might feel betrayed by Rhodes' decision to team with Reigns, the man responsible for so much of their recent struggles, causing him to snap on his so-called "friend."
Additionally, rumors of The Rock's return to WWE may add even more intrigue. Reports suggest that Dwayne Johnson could reenter the wrestling fold sometime in October or November, potentially aligning with Sikoa’s Bloodline to further escalate the feud with Reigns. If The Rock returns at Bad Blood, it could set the stage for a new power struggle within the Bloodline, with Reigns facing new challenges from both Sikoa and the returning Final Boss.
With all of these thoughts in mind, one thing is for sure. Fans are in for quite the treat come WWE's detour in Atlanta.
