Can WWE Still Make A Star Out Of Austin Theory?

Austin Theory was once positioned as one of the top upcoming wrestlers in WWE. His success in the company was almost inevitable as he was personally favored by Vince McMahon. The former WWE CEO took a major interest in him and personally worked with him on television for a while. He was often referred to as “Vince’s chosen one.”

Back in 2023, Theory even faced John Cena in a WrestleMania match for the United States Championship, where he surprisingly won. This was an underwhelming match for most fans, and a lot of them felt Theory wasn’t yet ready to defeat someone like The Cenation Leader. WWE did a lot of things with Theory when McMahon was still running the creatives, but none of them worked out for him in the end.

Theory has been missing from WWE programming for three months. He’s currently sidelined due to an undisclosed injury, but there have been talks of a big push coming for him once he returns. Is there still time for WWE to turn him into the prominent wrestler he was once poised to be?

Austin Theory Received A Huge Push In WWE Under Vince McMahon

Austin Theory got his start in wrestling with the World Wrestling Alliance 4 promotion in 2016. He would then go on to work for many indie promotions before being offered a tryout by WWE in 2018. He officially signed with the company next year and worked in the developmental brand, with his first match being against Roderick Strong for the North American Championship.

Many wrestlers work in NXT for years before they’re called to the main roster. But with Theory, this wasn’t the case. A few months after joining NXT, he made his main roster debut and joined Zelina Vega’s stable. But this only lasted for a short time.

Later, he started working as one of Seth Rollins’ disciples. And it seemed like WWE finally had a vision for him. Unfortunately, he was kicked out of the group next month and was sent back to NXT.

Fans realized that Theory needed to work more on his character before he could secure a position on the stacked main roster. In 2021, he returned to Raw with a new gimmick, one where he annoyed wrestlers by taking selfies during matches.

Around this time, WWE did that bizarre Cleopatra’s Egg storyline (which was a promotion for The Rock’s Red Notice movie). It turns out Theory had stolen this egg, and he later returned it to Vince McMahon, who offered him a WWE Title match against Big E as a reward.

He then became his protégé, and this kickstarted his main event journey in WWE. Theory received several big opportunities over the next few months, but failed to capitalize on them. He also had his WrestleMania moment in 2022, where he got stunned by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

Austin Theory Lost All Of His Momentum After Vince McMahon’s Departure

Theory was speculated to be a future WWE Champion, but so far, he has only won the United States Championship. The weird part about his run is Theory had also won the Money in the Bank briefcase in 2022, but he ended up cashing it in for Rollins’ US Title. And even then, he lost.

By this time, Vince McMahon had departed from the company. The guiding light looking after Theory was no longer here, and everyone assumed that Triple H didn’t see him as a main-eventer, unlike his previous boss.

Theory floated on the mid-card scene ever since. The only interesting thing he did since then was partnering with Grayson Waller and creating A-Town Down Under. Waller would constantly throw him under the bus, and it seemed like Theory was going to turn face soon.

Fans were also getting behind him, and after a long time, it seemed like Theory had the potential to become a star again. But for some reason, WWE refused to pull the plug on his heel turn, and then Theory got injured.

WWE Has Big Plans For Austin Theory After His Return

He was removed from WWE.com’s active wrestlers’ list, and many fans believed he’s no longer a part of the company. But he’s still signed with them, and if the latest reports are true, Theory could be making his return soon. Wrestling Observer reported (and Fightful later confirmed) that WWE plans to include him in the Survivor Series WarGames match as part of Seth Rollins’ team, but with the recent developments on Monday Night Raw, there might be a change of plans.

As many fans will know, Rollins has been kicked out of his own group by Bron Breakker. So it’s unlikely Rollins will be teaming up with his ex-stablemates. But it doesn’t mean Theory can’t join the group and continue his journey as a main event heel going forward.

Once, Triple H said that Theory “has all the potential to be one of the biggest stars in the business.” The wrestler has proved time and time again that he’s ready to put in the work and keep up with other wrestlers in the business.

If WWE handles his upcoming return correctly, there’s a high chance Theory becomes a major star in the upcoming months.
