Cardinals Ready to Conquer the Black Warrior River’s Head

The University of Louisville rowing team is gearing up for an exciting start to their 2023-24 season as they prepare to compete in the Head of the Black Warrior River regatta in Alabama. Alongside the host Crimson Tide, the Cardinals will also be facing off against the University of Miami.

Head Coach Derek Copeland is optimistic about their return to Alabama, stating, “We found that the format and competition last year fit nicely with our fall season goals.” The team will be competing in a head race style event, with Varsity fours, eights, and a novice boat all taking part.

Coach Copeland explains, “We have spent more time training in the fours so far this year and are excited to see how these boats stack up against Miami and Alabama.” He also highlights the importance of this regatta for the novice boat, saying, “It’ll be fun for them to see their learning pay off.”

In the second session of the regatta, the Cardinals will be participating in a 1v8, 2v8, and Novice 8 races. Coach Copeland states, “This will allow us to extend the competition in a way that prepares the teams for early spring racing in 2024. This design should be a lot of fun.”

Looking ahead, Louisville will be traveling to Charlottesville, Va. for the Rivanna Romp Head Race on November 12.
