  • Cody and Drew proposed Orton accidentally cost Cody so Drew wins the Undisputed title; WWE passed.
  • ESPN and fans called the main event underwhelming; Rhodes retained clean in a disappointingly flat finish.
  • Drew drew praise for his showing; the match video has more dislikes than likes, and Cena's brutal loss upset fans.

Amid widespread criticism of WWE's first-ever presentation of WrestlePalooza this past Saturday, news is surfacing that two top talents involved in a main event match pitched for a different finish, one that would have arguably made the event far more exciting for fans.

Sources indicate that both Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre pitched a scenario in which Randy Orton would accidentally cost Rhodes the Undisputed Championship. That finish was decided against, and instead, Cody pinned Drew clean in the ring.

Cody Wanted Drew To Win The Title

As it played out, Cody Rhodes ultimately retained the WWE Championship in a match ESPN -- the network that hosted the show -- described as underwhelming. Their reviews stated that the main event felt more like a “main event of SmackDown” rather than a premium live event headliner. That frustration was echoed by many members of the WWE Universe who were surprised that Rhodes won as clean as he did in a match that included no surprises, particularly given that Triple H teased shocking turns before the show.

Apparently, Cody and Drew wanted a big surprise, and both were on board with a title change. Sources also indicate that both Rhodes and McIntyre pitched Randy Orton, accidentally costing Rhodes the WWE Title. This would’ve set up Cody chasing the title once again and winning it back from Drew before Randy pulled the trigger and turned on Cody.

Fans Upset That McIntyre Keeps Being Overlooked

Meanwhile, Drew McIntyre’s performance drew widespread acclaim. One vocal fan commented that McIntyre is “literally the rarest breed in wrestling,” capable of elevating any storyline, even when the booking is less than ideal. To demonstrate how bothered by the finish fans were, the highlight video of Rhodes vs. McIntyre on WWE’s YouTube channel currently has more dislikes than likes.

This wasn't the only match that surprised people. John Cena faced Brock Lesnar and was handily destroyed as part of his farewell tour. While it makes sense that Lesnar would be nearly unstoppable in his return to WWE, having Cena lose like this with only a handful of matches remaining left a sour taste in the mouths of many fans.

WWE made some interesting creative choices with Wrestlepalooza and the reviews thus far aren't great. Some are wondering if this will be a wakeup call for Triple H and those writing the shows.
