Did WWE secretly tease a dream match between Cody Rhodes and wrestling veteran on SmackDown?
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

WWE may have started to plant the seeds for an inevitable match between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton . On last night’s episode of SmackDown, the former Legacy members met backstage. The American Nightmare wished the fourteen-time world champion good luck for his match against Tama Tonga . In response, Orton thanked him before walking away. However, The Viper notably had a peek at the title throughout their conversation.

In the main event of the night, the veteran defeated The Bloodline member to advance into the King of the Ring finals. For the first time ever, Randy Orton will be squaring off against Gunther on tonight’s King and Queen of the Ring PLE. Interestingly, if the Apex Predator does emerge victorious, he’ll receive a world title shot at SummerSlam.

Having said that, this would seemingly confirm a match between Orton and Rhodes for the August 3rd PLE. After the Grand Slam Champion returned to WWE, the WWE Universe speculated on the idea of him squaring off against Dusty Rhodes ‘ kid. The history between the two men dates back to Cody’s WWE debut in 2007.

The Legend Killer back then disrespected Dusty backstage, leading to a match where Orton emerged victorious. Two years later, they would be a part of the Legacy faction alongside Ted DiBiase Jr. While a match of this magnitude can easily be a future WrestleMania main event, fans shouldn’t be surprised if WWE pulls the trigger on the feud in the coming months.

Brian Gewirtz found Cody Rhodes’ Royal Rumble win “confusing”

This year’s road to WrestleMania wasn’t a straightforward one. It all started when The Rock returned on the SmackDown after the Royal Rumble to take Cody Rhodes‘ main event spot. The 2024 winner was destined to face Roman Reigns in a rematch from last year’s event. However, The Final Boss had agreed to a deal to face his cousin at WrestleMania XL.

Recently, the Black Adam star’s business partner, Brian Gewirtz, spoke in detail about how the changes were made. According to him, Rhodes winning the Royal Rumble was a confusing decision given that the dream match had been locked at that point. Gewirtz claimed that CM Punk winning the match would’ve made much more sense instead.

In retrospect, the events that transpired led to one of the greatest moments in WrestleMania history. Not only did Rhodes get to finish his story, but The Rock turned heel and embarked on one of his best runs.
