'Dirty' Dom Mysterio Set For Double Title Defense

“Dirty” Dominik Mysterio seems set to defend both his WWE Intercontinental Championship and AAA Mega Championship in an epic triple threat match. Recent episodes of WWE Raw have proven that “Dirty” Dom can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Mysterio’s cunning approaches to winning matches have easily become the most entertaining part of the flagship WWE Monday Night show on Netflix. The crowd’s response to Mysterio is growing louder and louder. On the most recent WWE Raw, Mysterio nearly won a battle royal and a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. The main event title picture seems inevitable for Mysterio in the future. But first, he seems to be heading for a triple threat match. This bout will offer ESPN’s top wrestler under 30 the chance to defy all the odds and win. By stacking the deck against Mysterio, WWE could give us one of the greatest underdog victories of all time.

Dominik Mysterio Finds Inventive Ways To Win

Mysterio shocked and delighted the WWE fans when he won the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 41.  Finn Balor pinned Bron Breakker, but just before the referee’s hand could count three, Mysterio landed a frogsplash and stole the victory. It was arguably the loudest crowd pop of the night. Penta was the fourth man in the WrestleMania match, and Mysterio hasn’t been able to shake him since. Mysterio holds three victories over Penta, including arguably his greatest IC title defense on WWE Raw in Perth. It was Mysterio’s inventive way of winning that made this match so entertaining. He distracted the referee with the IC title to allow him to hit Penta with the ringbell hammer. He then loaded his boot up with the hammer and hit a 619. It was the latest in a long line of inventive victories for Dom. A week later, the hammer caused the distraction to set up a win over Rusev. Rusev pulled the hammer from the boot. When the referee dumped this out of the ring, Mysterio hit a low blow. He followed this up with a 619 and a frogsplash for a win.

Mysterio vs. Rusev vs. Penta

Neither Penta nor Rusev seems to be able to let their losses go. This makes it impossible for either to get a one-on-one shot at Mysterio without the other getting involved. This means a triple threat match for the Intercontinental Championship is a sure thing. Mysterio eliminating both Penta and Rusev from the WWE Raw battle royal puts any doubt to rest. He’ll be forced to face them both at the same time. But we are missing one key ingredient that will add extra spice to the match. 145 days into his IC title reign, Mysterio became the king of the luchadors when he won the AAA Mega Championship. This gives him two men he must face. But also two titles he must defend. Mysterio seems too clever to beat at the moment. So it would make sense that WWE officials would want to give him a real challenge. Balor might also repay the favour to his Judgement Day brethren Mysterio and suggest he defends his AAA Mega Championship. Balor and JD McDonagh recently lost the World Tag Team Championship when Mysterio mentioned their lack of title defences. A triple threat match with both titles on the line would give Mysterio the perfect setting to outdo himself in his creativity. Perhaps he will be forced to defend them both back-to-back. Kurt Angle was forced to defend his European Championship and IC title in this way at WrestleMania 2000. It would be a great way for Dominik Mysterio to have a high-profile title defense. If this match was preceded by the inevitable Mysterio split from The Judgement Day is would make things even harder for “Dirty” Dom. His homecoming show in San Diego at WWE Survivor Series is too perfect an opportunity to miss. Can he survive such insurmountable odds? Surely only “Dirty” Dom can?
