For over 30 years, Rey Mysterio has been classified as the greatest luchador of all time. Although Rey is now 50 years old, he can still move and perform like he did 20 years ago. Unfortunately, in wrestling, every wrestler reaches the end of their career. Even though Rey isn’t retiring anytime soon, it doesn’t mean WWE can’t prepare for his last match. Rey Mysterio’s outstanding wrestling involved many significant rivalries, leaving multiple names in contention to be his final opponent. Ironically, the one name that stands out as a fit for Rey’s final opponent is his son, Dominik Mysterio.
Dominik Mysterio has been on a prevailing run in WWE this year. Currently, Dominik holds both the WWE Intercontinental and AAA Mega Championship. Seeing Dominik grow as a wrestler and star has been satisfying to see, due to his main event capabilities. Last Monday on RAW, Dominik and Rey revisited their feud when Dominik was gloating about his success, claiming that he is the greatest luchador.
Rey humbled him by stating that as long as he is still around, he is the greatest luchador around. This claim holds, as Rey won multiple major championships all across the globe. Although Dominik is making significant progress, he still needs to grow before considering himself the best.
This whole self-proclamation of being the greatest luchador could become a storyline by WWE. What WWE can do sometime in the future is have the father and son compete against each other one final time. Depending on whether WWE does a retirement tour for Rey, Dominik should be the one who wrestles his father for the final time.
WWE could run with this angle in 2027 due to AJ Styles possibly having a retirement tour in 2026. In singles matches, Dominik has never defeated Rey, as he’s lost twice to him. It would be a full circle moment for Rey to end his legendary run by wrestling his son, who is building to be one of WWE’s top heels in the upcoming years.
