Drew McIntyre reportedly still has a while left on his contract with WWE amid fans voicing concerns about the creative team's handling of the Scottish Warrior. McIntyre has repeatedly failed to defeat Cody Rhodes and dethrone the WWE Champion, much to the pro wrestling community's frustration.
McIntyre signed a new four-year contract in the spring of 2024, and Fightful Select reports that this deal doesn't expire until at least 2028, and an extension can take him through to WrestleMania 44. TKO board member Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson gave the Scot a gift after he penned his new contract ahead of WrestleMania 40.
The Economic Times reports that the 40-year-old's reported annual salary is $8 million, which makes him the fifth-highest-paid wrestler in the promotion. He was rewarded with a lucrative new deal for his hard work, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he became the company's top star while performing in the Thunderdome.
McIntyre's success in the ring has diminished in recent years, though, as WWE have focused on other names such as Rhodes, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. He won the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 40 but was cashed in on by Damian Priest.
The former two-time world champion has since feuded with CM Punk, eventually losing their lengthy rivalry. He has lost his last two title matches against Rhodes due to shenanigans that have left fans with a sour taste in their mouth.
McIntyre's future was uncertain before he re-signed with WWE, and speculation grew that the Scot might head to AEW if he allowed his previous deal to expire. He was released by the promotion in 2014 and took to the indies and TNA, where he rebuilt his wrestling character, earning a return to WWE in 2017.
While making a guest appearance on the Pat McAfee Show shortly after signing the contract, he opened up about the negotiations and why he took his time agreeing to the terms.
"If you try to politic, you're way ahead of me, I'll just beat you down, and I'll get myself ahead of you because I know how this game works, and I'm too big and wise, and that's why I've been with WWE for the foreseeable future. I wasn't gonna go anywhere. If anybody out there was unsure reading those internet rumors or whatever we were just in a place where I had to get things right from my family."
McIntyre explained how understanding WWE President Nick Khan and chief content officer Triple H were:
"I got with Nick Khan and Triple H, and they were so understanding. We got things right for the future. Drew McIntyre was never gonna go away from WWE. And it's awesome that The Rock made that announcement. It is the first time he's done that for anybody on the roster. Drew McIntyre has re-signed with WWE I want to talk with some positive and inspirational headlines."
McIntyre's long-term future is certainly with WWE, where he continues to be one of the company's top stars despite his recent setbacks challenging Rhodes. He is one of the veterans in the locker room who could soon pick a feud back up with rising star Jacob Fatu.
