Every NXT Champion Who Won a WWE World Title

NXT has served as WWE’s premier developmental brand since its rebranding in 2012, transforming from a competition show into a legitimate third brand that has produced some of WWE’s biggest stars. The NXT Championship has been held by numerous talented wrestlers who went on to achieve main roster success, with several reaching the pinnacle of professional wrestling by capturing a WWE World Championship.

These wrestlers proved that NXT isn’t just a stepping stone; it’s a proving ground for future main event players. Another former NXT Champion, Bron Breakker, has the chance to join this elite list. On January 5th, 2026, on WWE Raw, he challenges CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship. Let’s look back at every NXT Champion who successfully captured a WWE World Title on the main roster.

Seth Rollins

Among all the NXT Champions, Seth Rollins undoubtedly had the most success on the main roster. Rollins was actually the first-ever NXT Champion when he defeated Jinder Mahal in the finals of the Gold Rush Tournament in 2012.

On the main roster, Rollins has won a World Championship six times, as he’s won the WWE, Universal, and World Heavyweight Titles twice each. Rollins’ first-ever WWE World Title win took place at WrestleMania 31, when he cashed in the Money in the Bank contract in the main event against Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. He was the World Heavyweight Champion recently, before he had to relinquish the belt due to injury.

Big E

Big E was the second NXT Champion, as he defeated Seth Rollins to win the belt in December of 2012. He had a dominant 153-day run as Champion before losing the title to Bo Dallas. Big E had already made his main roster debut as the NXT Champion, where he was paired with Dolph Ziggler.

After a run with the Intercontinental Championship, Big E formed “The New Day” alongside Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods. They had a ton of success as they were among the most popular acts on the roster, but it hindered Big E’s singles success. Big E would finally capture the WWE Championship in 2021, when he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Bobby Lashley. He had a strong 110-day reign as champion, but unfortunately suffered a brutal injury, which has kept him out of action since then.

Kevin Owens

After establishing himself as one of the best indie wrestlers in the world, Kevin Owens arrived in the WWE in 2014 as part of NXT. He had immediate success as he defeated his long-term rival and former best friend, Sami Zayn, to win the gold at NXT TakeOver: Rival in early 2015. He held the championship for 142 days and dropped it to Finn Balor.

Similar to his NXT run, it didn’t take long for Owens to have an impact on the main roster. He defeated John Cena in his debut. In 2016, after Finn Bàlor vacated the Universal Championship, Owens was the one who captured it as he won a Fatal 4-Way Elimination match, with help from Triple H. Kevin Owens has always remained one of the top stars on the roster, even if that run as the WWE Universal Champion remains his only World Title reign.

Finn Bàlor

Finn Bàlor was among the most hyped wrestlers when he signed with WWE in 2014. It didn’t take long for Balor to win the NXT Championship. He defeated Kevin Owens to win the gold at The Beast in the East 2015. Bàlor had a 292-day reign, which stood as the longest NXT Title reign for a long time. Bàlor returned to NXT in 2019. He would even win the NXT Championship again in 2020 before returning to the main roster.

After a successful stint on NXT, Bàlor was drafted to Raw as part of the WWE Draft in 2016. Bàlor quickly made his mark on the main roster. He even became the inaugural Universal Champion at SummerSlam by defeating Seth Rollins. Unfortunately, he got injured during the match and had to relinquish the title the next day. Bàlor has challenged for World Titles many times since then, but has failed to capture the big one again.

Drew McIntyre

While NXT is supposed to be a developmental territory for new wrestlers, it wasn’t the case with Drew McIntyre. After a failed run on WWE’s main roster from 2007 to 2012, McIntyre made his return to the company in 2017, following a strong run on the indies. McIntyre would wrestle on NXT first, and he became the NXT Champion shortly after. Even though his reign wasn’t long, it served its purpose of re-establishing McIntyre before his jump to the main roster.

His main roster run was pretty rough, though, as he failed to find his footing once again. That changed in 2020, when he defeated Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 36. He had a very good reign as champion, leading the company through the rough times of the pandemic. He had another run as the WWE Champion. Also, he won the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XL, only to lose it to Damian Priest immediately after.
