The Elimination Chamber match has become one of the most important matches in WWE history. With risk comes reward by competing in this grueling match. A championship match or a number one contender’s match to compete for a world championship at WrestleMania has been at stake in Elimination Chamber matches.
However, the WWE Championship is the biggest prize in the industry, and only 25% of Elimination Chamber matches have had the coveted WWE Championship on the line.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t until 2006 that the WWE Championship featured in the Elimination Chamber match for the first time. 2022 was the most recent time that the WWE Championship was defended in a Chamber. Nevertheless, the nine Elimination Chamber matches in WWE history were a mixture of drama. However, others failed to live up to the expectation.
The WWE Championship was a yo-yo at the start of 2022, with the title exchanging between Big E, Brock Lesnar, and Bobby Lashley at Day 1 and the Royal Rumble. Nevertheless, Lashley carried a legitimate injury in his WWE Championship title defense, and he was written out of the match when Rollins buckle-bombed Theory through the pod.
This Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Championship belonged to one man. Lesnar won the 2022 men’s Royal Rumble match, but dropped the title to Lashley at the Royal Rumble. However, the Beast Incarnate, hellbent on regaining the title, was on a rampage. He eliminated Rollins, Riddle, Styles, and Theory in a dominant performance to win his seventh WWE Championship and 10th WWE World Championship overall.
Chris Jericho was one of the main threats to CM Punk’s WWE Championship at Elimination Chamber 2012. As soon as Jericho was ruled out of the equation, there was a sense of inevitability that the Straight Edge Savior was going to retain the WWE Championship. Nevertheless, Punk and his former tag team championship-winning partner, Kofi Kingston, got things underway.
Punk and The Miz were the final two competitors, going back and forth. Ultimately, Punk won a Chamber match for the first time by starting the match and retaining the WWE Championship after finishing Miz off with the GTS.
The tensions between Legacy members Randy Orton and Ted DiBiase built up in the Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Championship in 2010. Sheamus entered as the reigning WWE Champion, but if he were going to retain the WWE Championship, he would’ve had to endure the whole match as he kicked things off.
DiBiase eliminated Orton after he nailed the Viper with a lead pipe that Cody Rhodes brought in. However, the Celtic Warrior’s WWE Championship reign was over as Triple H eliminated him with a Pedigree.
Nevertheless, Cena captured his eighth WWE world championship in the 10th Elimination Chamber match in WWE history. His joy was short-lived as Batista beat him in an impromptu match for the WWE Championship.
Six WWE Champions featured in an Elimination Chamber match for Drew McIntyre’s WWE Championship at Elimination Chamber 2021. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19 restrictions, no fans were present. As expected, this was an entertaining Elimination Chamber match with all six determined to hold the WWE Championship again. Still, McIntyre was hellbent on not letting his WWE Championship reign end on the road to WrestleMania 37.
Jeff Hardy has a high threshold of pain, and he connected with a Whisper in the Wind onto Sheamus from the top of the pod. Nevertheless, McIntyre retained the WWE Championship. However, McIntyre failed to leave with the WWE Championship as The Miz successfully cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to become a two-time WWE Champion.
New Year’s Revolution 2006 was the first time that the WWE Championship was defended in an Elimination Chamber match. John Cena, Carlito, Chris Masters, and Kurt Angle were debutants in this match. However, former WWE Champions Kane and Shawn Michaels had experience in Chamber matches. Surprisingly, Angle was the first one to be eliminated, but days later, he jumped ship to SmackDown and won the World Heavyweight Championship.
Carlito and Masters were stars of the match. They worked as a cohesive unit and cleaned out the house. However, Carlito eliminated the Masterpiece. In a matter of seconds, Cena snuck up behind Carlito and rolled him up to retain the WWE Championship. Just like McIntyre in 2021, Cena fell victim to a Money in the Bank cash-in with Edge defeating a battered and bloodied Cena to win his first WWE Championship.
On the final pitstop on the road to WrestleMania 30, Randy Orton defended the WWE Championship in an Elimination Chamber in 2014. Fans were desperate for Daniel Bryan to win, but the likes of John Cena, Christian, Cesaro, and Sheamus had other ideas to spoil the party. The Wyatt Family interfered by attacking Cena, and fans salivated at Cena’s assault by chanting, “Thank you, Wyatt.”
Orton took advantage and eliminated Cena. Fans went crazy when Bryan was in the final two with the Viper. Bryan showed some fight by kicking out of one RKO, but he was unable to kick out of a second after Kane clocked Bryan in the face, allowing Orton to retain the WWE Championship.
A new look Elimination Chamber was debuted for the first time in 2017, with John Cena once again defending the WWE Championship inside the Elimination Chamber. Cena’s record-equaling 16th WWE World Championship reign lasted just a couple of weeks as Bray Wyatt eliminated him.
The sequences between Cena, Wyatt, and AJ Styles were fascinating. Ultimately, the night belonged to Wyatt with the fireflies burning brightly as Wyatt overcame Styles to clinch his long-awaited first WWE Championship.
A new WWE Champion was guaranteed within five minutes in the Elimination Chamber match for Edge’s WWE Championship. The Rated-R Superstar began proceedings, but he was eliminated within minutes by his eternal rival, Jeff Hardy. This WWE Championship match was off the charts. Hardy had an excellent performance, but The Undertaker eliminated him with a Tombstone.
Undertaker and Triple H’s slugfest as the final two was one of the best endings to a Chamber match. The Game kicked out of the Tombstone, and the Deadman kicked out of the Pedigree. However, Triple H connected with a second Pedigree to clinch his 13th WWE World Championship. This was the first time that the WWE Championship changed hands in an Elimination Chamber match.
Timing is everything, and Mustafa Ali’s untimely concussion opened the door for Kofi Kingston to become a major contender for the WWE Championship. “The New” Daniel Bryan had to run the gauntlet by defending his WWE Championship and not getting the luxury of starting the match in a pod. He and Samoa Joe had some excellent exchanges in the early stages of the match.
Everyone looked strong in this match, with the likes of Jeff Hardy, Randy Orton, and AJ Styles hellbent on getting their hands on the WWE Championship. However, Kingston was the star of the show, and fans went berserk when he executed Trouble in Paradise, but Bryan kicked out. Ultimately, Bryan delayed Kingston’s eventual ascension to the throne with the Running Knee to retain the gold.
