2025 is underway in AEW and Tony Khan is promising a big year for the company. At the top of the pile currently is Jon Moxley , who reigns as AEW world champion, but with the whole locker room seemingly gunning for him, who is best equipped to unseat him on the throne and reign as AEW world champion? Multiple names have the ability to wear AEW world title gold this year and here we look at the most suitable contenders.
Almost certain to wear the belt in 2025, Christian Cage has been on the verge several times due to his guaranteed title shot that he earned during the Casino Gauntlet at last year’s All In. As a disgusting heel, it’s highly unlikely that Cage cashes in on Moxley, but a good feeling moment for numerous top babyfaces could see Cage spoil the party and get his run as world champion off to a solid start with the crowd firmly against him.
Will Ospreay is the darkling of AEW who has captured the hearts of all wrestling fans with his incredible in-ring displays against the likes of Bryan Danielson, Swerve Strickland, and Kyle Fletcher. Ospreay is arguably AEW’s biggest star, and there’s no doubt that winning the big one is very much in the mind of Khan, a huge Ospreay supporter. The moment that coronation arrives could mean big business for AEW, which ensures it’s likely to happen sooner rather than later as AEW looks to improve on its 2024 showing.
Always the heartbeat of AEW, Kenny Omega is back and he’s not showing any signs of slowing down based on his Wrestle Kingdom appearance against Gabe Kidd. If Moxley and his Death Riders faction are hellbent on destroying AEW, then there’s only one person capable of being the savior and that’s Omega.
It was clear at the end of 2024 that Tony Khan had huge plans for Kyle Fletcher as he enjoyed his biggest win to date against his former friend, Ospreay. Fletcher ticks so many boxes when analyzing the tools required for a world champion, and as long as his booking remains strong, he will likely have a place in the main event scene. AEW travels to Australia next month and if that’s going to be a regular market for the company, then Fletcher’s chances of succeeding are going to be high.
Does a potential Cage title run increase the chances of his former tag team partner in WWE being the man to oppose him in the top spot? These two have excellent chemistry and their feuds have often generated interest no matter what company they’ve been representing. Cope is currently involved in a feud with Moxley, so with Cage being a natural selection later in the year, he doesn’t seem to be too far away from the title picture and that type of booking can’t be accidental.
