Goldberg decided to complain in a recent interview about the way WWE booked his retirement match. Initially, fans overwhelmingly agreed that WWE dropped the ball by not heavily promoting the bout and letting the show cut away and go off the air as Goldberg was giving his farewell speech. However, the narrative has started to shift.
I respect Goldberg and he seems like a decent man but WTF was he thinking man? He has been collecting check after check against top guys and putting on mediocre matches ... and gets a hell of a send off. And then complains?? First feeling sympathy for the way things ended for Goldberg, the narrative has shifted since his interview with Ariel Helwani. Goldberg complained about a lack of appearances leading up to the match, then his speech being cut short. He said there were 100 ways it could have been done differently, then suggested it happened intentionally because he was a WCW guy and this wouldn't have happened to John Cena or The Undertaker.
WWE sometimes-host Peter Rosenberg tore a strip off of Goldberg's take, saying he should have been grateful for the opportunity given to him and not complain. Most wrestlers, who are better than Goldberg, don't get what he got, argued Rosenberg. He wrote on his social account: "I respect Goldberg and he seems like a decent man but WTF was he thinking man? He has been collecting check after check against top guys and putting on mediocre matches ... and gets a hell of a send off. And then complains?? I'm lost."
In addition, popular social media account @ChandratheMan writes:
"So let’s look at Goldberg: -Cracked the referee’s rib in his last match and never apologized -Didn’t thank GUNTHER, who led the match and gave him his longest match in 22 years -Got his final match in his hometown with the world title on the line, and still complained -Spent years trashing WWE for not giving him a sendoff, then got one and acted like it wasn’t good enough -WWE posted his full retirement speech on their official YouTube, it hit over a million views, and he didn’t even acknowledge it Bret Hart was right."
Understanding that the send-off wasn't perfect, several analysts and fans seem to be realizing that Goldberg isn't as grateful as he should be. He received a substantial sum for his farewell match, then overlooked all the effort that went into making it happen when WWE didn't have to.
Some are arguing WWE even derailed Jey Uso's title run to give Goldberg a retirement match that included the World Championship.
Rosenberg suggested that the people who are often hardest to work with are also the ones who complain the most. Is that Goldberg? Some fans are starting to think so.
