Gunther Having No WrestleMania Plans Is Alarming

Gunther is currently one of the dominant heels that the WWE has to offer. He has retired legends such as Goldberg, John Cena, and, most recently, AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble. Let’s also not forget that he is a former World Heavyweight Champion and has the longest Intercontinental Championship reign ever at 666 days. Someone who’s that established and has worked with the best of the best should have a storyline and a match headed into WrestleMania 42, right?

Currently, that is not the case with Gunther. This is now three straight episodes of Monday Night Raw where Gunther does not appear or is not even mentioned as someone who will be a part of Mania. Keep in mind that this is a wrestler who is being deemed the new career killer. To have no creative direction for one of the best wrestlers and top heels that the WWE offers is truly astonishing and warrants further exploration.

The Original Plan For Gunther Has Seemingly Fallen Apart

Gunther’s most recent opponent was Dragon Lee. Beyond the match being entertaining, Gunther did something that is deemed disrespectful when fighting a luchador when he unmasked Lee. With that feud seemingly now done, many wondered what was next for Gunther.

The aftermath of that short-lived feud was supposed to lead to a clash with the legendary Rey Mysterio, who’s a good friend of Lee’s. The current issue with what has halted that program from starting is that Mysterio is currently dealing with a rib injury he suffered prior to the Rumble. Mysterio has yet to appear on Raw since then, and that has really harmed Gunther when it comes to being a major factor at WrestleMania.

It’s understandable that injuries can derail storylines, but to have no alternative plan for someone that Creative has propped up this much is outrageous. This is showing that Triple H and the WWE producers are unable to pivot once something goes wrong. With now just about three weeks away from WrestleMania, anything that Gunther will be involved in will be last minute and can possibly feel rushed.

Given that Mysterio cannot return in time, there is an alternative solution that will be an attractive match to the audience.

Going Against Penta For The Intercontinental Championship Would Be Fireworks

Penta is one of the most loved WWE superstars in the world. After defeating Dominik Mysterio once again in his first title defense as IC champ, there’s no other real challenger in the rearview mirror. This can be a perfect opportunity for Gunther to step up and give Penta the biggest challenge in his career. Having to defend the belt against the longest reigning IC champ ever would be a tall mountain to climb for Penta.

Granted, there will be a certain group of fans who would be opposed to this due to possibly burying Gunther if he loses. That being said, there can be a scenario where multiple luchadores come together and help Penta defeat Gunther, such as Lee and Penta’s brother, Rey Fenix.

The main point is he can be protected even in a loss, and this can put Penta over and show he’s ready to have a long championship reign. Having two wrestlers who are known for having great matches is perfect for WrestleMania. Nonetheless, the WWE is about storylines. Throwing this together last minute would have a fair amount of the audience not care about the match. The clock is ticking, and the WWE would need to get the ball rolling on this ASAP.

End Of My Gunther Rant

The fact that this is a topic heading into WrestleMania is a detriment to the WWE. There’s no real explanation for having someone such as Jelly Roll have more TV time leading up to WrestleMania more than Gunther. This is no disrespect to Jelly Roll, but the attention that the WWE is giving to celebrities more than their top talent says a lot.

This is not to say it’s set in stone that Gunther will be left off the card for good. With three episodes of Raw left before Mania, Triple H and everyone else who calls the creative shots need to get it together quickly. Being unable to build a storyline for someone they built up this much would truly be embarrassing.
