At WrestleMania 41, Seth Rollins turned heel, aligning himself with Paul Heyman to form a new faction that includes Bron Breakker and now Bronson Reed. The heel group is fighting with several WWE Raw stars, including CM Punk . It's just the latest chapter in the rivalry between Punk and Rollins, now with the latter firmly in the role as the bad guy. It's a moment CM Punk saw coming because years ago, even before returning to WWE, Punk declared that Seth Rollins wasn't good at being a babyface.
CM Punk was famously fired by WWE in 2014. It took until Survivor Series 2023 for him to return, but during his absence he was hired to be a panelist on WWE Backstage, a FOX series not officially affiliated with WWE, but which was about what happened on WWE TV that week. This allowed Punk to speak about the company he had left behind without working for them. After his debut, Seth Rollins and CM Punk began taking shots at each other, both through social media and the show. On one episode of WWE Backstage, CM Punk said of Seth Rollins, who was struggling as a babyface:
“He’s just not good at being a good guy. Do what you’re good at. Be a bad guy. And the ironic thing is now everyone is gonna cheer him.”
It was shocking to see CM Punk say on television that one of the faces WWE was failing at his babyface character, but there was some truth to his words. Six years later, it's still accurate.
Seth Rollins has been both a babyface and a heel several times. He's such a great bad guy that fans begin to love him, forcing WWE to turn him babface, but when fans get sick of him as a good guy, WWE turns him bad again. That's what just happened this year. He'd done all he could do as a babyface, and his constant whining was getting old with crowds, so WWE turned him at WrestleMania 41. Now Rollins is carrying the Raw brand as its top heel, where his feud with Punk continues.
Seth Rollins was made to be a bad guy, but with fans still singing along to his entrance music and barking at his faction member, Bron Breakker, it probably won't be long before Rollins is being cheered, proving CM Punk right again.
