Needing a replacement opponent for Kevin Owens at the last minute meant trying to find someone that made sense, but wouldn't be hurt creatively in a last-minute pivot. Orton saw an opportunity with Hendry and petitioned the creative team and Triple H to make it happen. It was, by most accounts, the right decision.

Speaking to Billboard.com, in an interesting quote that has some realizing certain talent has significant sway at the biggest times of the year, Orton spoke about the creative process that led to his match with Hendry, noting that he personally pitched the rising star as his opponent for WWE’s biggest stage. Orton understood the assignment in trying to replace Owens, and he was aware the situation called for a unique solution.
“We put our heads together and it was actually my idea for it to be Joe Hendry. I kept pushing for it, and a couple people were unsure, but I was able to talk everybody into it.”
The decision ultimately paid off. Hendry, known for his charisma and viral musical entrances, brought something fresh to the card. Orton acknowledged that, calling the bout “perfect”.
“I’m really glad that they went with him,” Orton added. “It was perfect. It was different from anything else on the card.”
While some fans were surprised when Hendry was announced for such a high-profile spot, Orton’s endorsement now helps explain how the matchup came to be. It also speaks to how much input Triple H gives the guys he trusts. Orton was willing to help elevate a potential future hire in Hendry, and being given a shot on a massive platform like WrestleMania may have led to Hendry being used for the first time as the TNA Champion on an NXT premium live event.
With WrestleMania 41 now history and Orton moving on to face John Cena in an upcoming title match, his comments offer a unique look at how WWE deals with creative changes.
