Future WWE Hall of Famer John Cena has been wrestling for over two decades. A career that long has a lot of matches. This past Saturday at Fan Expo Boston, Cena talked to Justin Barrasso , where he revealed that the toughest match of his career was against Bray Wyatt.
The 17-time World Champion revealed that the match that pushed him was the Firefly Funhouse match against the late Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 36. He said:
“It’s the match I had in the Firefly Fun House. The reason that the opponent was tough–and I know it was against Bray Wyatt–was because that was more or less a match against me. I’ll say that was my toughest match.” (h/t: F4WOnline)
To say that the match was wild is an understatement. It started with Cena’s Ruthless Aggression debut, with Wyatt taking on the role of Cena’s first opponent, Kurt Angle. Later on in the match, Cena was thrust into a WCW ring, and he was wearing the New World Order black-and-white T-shirt.
The match ended with The Fiend hitting the Sister Abigail and then the Mandible Claw for the win. It was one of the weirdest matches in Cena’s career, which took place during a crazy year, too. WrestleMania 36 happened during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cena has only a few months left on his farewell tour. The WWE Superstar’s run saw him turn heel at Elimination Chamber on March 1, and then he recently took a U-turn back to the babyface that fans love. His heel turn was kind of a waste. The SmackDown ahead of SummerSlam was when Cena started to turn back to his usual self. At SummerSlam, all was revealed as to why — he lost the WWE Undisputed Title to Cody Rhodes and was later attacked by a returning Brock Lesnar. Cena’s next opponent on his farewell tour is Logan Paul at Clash In Paris.
The match was only recently announced during last Friday’s episode of SmackDown. Paul had interrupted Cena, who was in the process of discussing Lesnar’s return. Paul demanded a match, and then he and Drew McIntyre attacked Cena. Cody Rhodes came out to help him, and then that’s when Cena agreed to the match. There are only a few more PLEs left for Cena, and there’s no doubt that Lesnar will be one of those opponents. The PLE is set for August 31.
