John Cena Just Inadvertently Condemned Backlash Over WWE Retirement

John Cena's retirement match against Gunther will always be remembered for its controversial finish when the 17-time world champion tapped out. Heavy boos rang out in Capital One Arena in Washington, DC and WWE's chief content officer, Triple H, got the brunt of fans' anger.

The main issue fans had with Cena losing to the Ring General in that fashion was that his mantra throughout his career was 'never give up'. But he has since explained that the finish was meant to convey that he was accepting his fate, much like a dying person's lights fading out.

John Cena's Tweet Fitting Response

Cena's defense of the ending to his WWE career still didn't prevent fans and even wrestling reporters from criticising the finish. Some argue that it made Gunther look weak as the 48-year-old tapped out on his terms with a smile on his face.

The debate over Cena's retirement match has dissipated since the turn of the year but it will remain one of the most controversial booking decisions in WWE history. The legendary former WWE star often leaves fans puzzled with his use of social media and a curious tweet he recently posted can be the perfect way to sum up the backlash.

Cena wrote on X:

"We all get frustrated and angry don’t forget how we act matters. Dumping emotions on undeserving individuals just adds pain to pain."

The Hollywood movie star is obviously not talking about the reaction Triple H received following the match against Gunther. But it is a perfect way to describe the negative response that ultimately marred what should have been a night to remember for Cena.

Triple H's booking has come under fire as of late amid reports suggesting plans are constantly changing on the Road to WrestleMania 42. His handling of Cena's farewell tour has been scrutinized, with some believing the WWE legend wasn't given the send-off he deserved.

CM Punk Called The Reaction 'Unhealthy'

Cena faced some of his biggest rivals during his retirement tour, including CM Punk. He successfully defended the Undisputed WWE Championship against Punk at Night of Champions in June 2025.

Punk has admitted that he feels he should have been Cena's last opponent, but understood the decision to give the honor to Gunther. But as for the reaction to the finish of that match, he was bemused:

"Some people maybe I don't think you understand what you're watching, but if you didn't like it, I can also understand that, but to overnight make it your entire personality and spend an unhealthy amount of time talking about it."

Punk has no intentions of retiring anytime soon and is the reigning World Heavyweight Champion heading towards Mania in April. He is set to defend his title in the main event against Royal Rumble winner Roman Reigns.
