  • Cena pitched SNME to pair main-roster stars with NXT in exhibition matches.
  • He wants his farewell night to spotlight future faces, not just a tribute special.
  • He sees the event as a launching pad to expose NXT talent to a sold-out audience.

John Cena isn’t content with simply taking a bow on December 13—he wants the stage in which his final match occurs also to elevate the future of business. During Monday’s Raw Recap show, Cena revealed that he personally pitched Triple H on a bold format for the upcoming Saturday Night’s Main Event, transforming what could have been a predictable farewell tribute into a showcase for WWE’s next in line.

Cena Asked To Showcase NXT On The Show

Cena explained how, traditionally, the way someone left their in-ring career was to go out on their back and take a loss to someone that they "put over". Cena said he thought more could be done. As a result, he said that he reached out to Triple H with a concern: a full two-hour John Cena tribute special would never hit the sweet spot. “If you do a whole John Cena tribute, two things are going to happen,” he told him. “You’re either going to do too much or too little. You’re never going to please everybody.” Instead, he suggested something bigger and far more meaningful—pairing top WWE main roster stars against standout talent from NXT in a series of exhibition matches.

This concept, Cena said, does a world of good for the wrestlers that will be the future faces of WWE over the next several years. “We have a sold-out building, hopefully the world is watching… I get to wrestle one final time, but in doing that, everyone also gets to look at what to look forward to.” For Cena, the night shouldn’t just mark the end of his own legendary run—it should shine a spotlight on the next generation waiting to carry the torch.

Cena Wants NXT Talents To Get Their Spotlight Too

He doubled down on the philosophy that retirement should be about giving back. He has no issue “doing the honors”, but he believes he had a chance to do more. With the Time Is Now tournament determining his final opponent and already featuring NXT stars, he views December 13 as a launching pad for others.

“I think we can take the eyes that care about showing up to our show and expose them to the future,” Cena said. He praised Triple H for being open to the idea. “Yes, it’s my last match, but collectively we’re all closing a chapter of an era of sports entertainment, and I want people to look forward to what’s next.”

With Cena’s final match just weeks away, he admits he's not going out on his own terms -- simply because he'd love to go forever but can't physically. The next best thing is being able to be a voice for those who could use it.
