John Cena’s Final Month: 3 Potential Mystery Opponents

During the promo for the Last Time Is Now Tournament, John Cena left the door open for a myriad of possibilities. He stated that the tournament would feature stars from Raw, SmackDown, NXT, and “maybe even some faces who don’t even work here.”

As expected, the rumor mill exploded as fans speculated about who could be an unexpected competitor. Here are three possible mystery opponents for the end of Cena’s retirement tour.

1) Austin Theory

Austin Theory has been out of action since July, reportedly dealing with an injury. There has been speculation that he will be returning to action soon, and WWE still has significant plans for the former United States Champion.

Cena said that on his last day, he wants to give someone the same opportunity he received on his first day. Theory, who has had encounters with Cena before, could be the perfect candidate if WWE wants to push him again.

There are also some parallels: Theory displays the same confidence (borderline cockiness) that Cena showed at the beginning and has a similar look. If giving a young star the spot for the last match at Saturday Night’s Main Event is actually the plan, then Theory may be the choice.

2) Jeff Hardy

Many fans believed that when Cena stated the tournament could feature non-WWE stars, he meant competitors from one of the partners, AAA or TNA. Jeff Hardy has always been a fan favorite in WWE, and while he has appeared recently on NXT, many would love to see him back on a bigger stage.

Cena and Hardy have only faced each other in singles competition once, back in 2008 for the number one contender to the WWE Championship. Cena won by pinfall in a match where fans seemed split 50/50. Hardy stated previously that he could have been a bigger star than Cena if he had made better decisions during his prime. Based on the crowd reaction that night, he may have been right.

Nobody knows exactly what could have been, but one more Cena-Hardy match would likely be exciting for fans of both legends.

3) The Rock

It feels as though Cena and The Rock have unfinished business. Back at Elimination Chamber, Cena had an epic heel turn, where he delivered a low blow to WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, and “sold his soul” to The Rock. After five months, however, he would return to his babyface persona after Rhodes stated he wanted to “face the real John Cena” at SummerSlam. Cena would admit how foolish he was acting and thanked Rhodes for being a good friend.

I was so hung up on how you might see me tomorrow that I forgot to realize how stupid I am acting today. Cody, you tried to tell me, but I didn’t listen. But you did what a good friend should do. You forced me to face it. You forced me into a fight.

Many felt that WWE had to pivot away from the heel move simply because it flopped. The Rock is viewed as one of the main reasons for this, as he was not really involved much following the turn. Without involvement from the Final Boss, continuing the heel storyline probably felt pointless.

Perhaps there is one more chance to rectify this storyline and bring it full circle. The Rock may not be too pleased that Cena decided to “take back his soul,” and that could lead to one final Cena versus Rock showdown.

End Of My John Cena Opponents Rant

We are in the home stretch of the retirement tour, so WWE needs to pull out all the stops. The tournament begins this coming Monday on Raw in Cena’s home state of Massachusetts, where Rusev faces Damien Priest, and Sheamus takes on Shinsuke Nakamura.

The winner of this tournament is supposed to be Cena’s final opponent at SNME next month. While that is the current report, WWE could add another twist, especially if the Final Boss decides to get involved. It will be interesting to see how the last month will play out for The Doctor of Thuganomics.
