Kevin Nash has leapt to the defence of Paul 'Triple H' Levesque after the WWE chief content officer received heavy criticism over the company's decision to hold WrestleMania 43 in Saudi Arabia. The news didn't go down well with fans from outside the Middle East, who have accused the promotion of prioritising money over their audience.
Triple H held a press conference on September 12 to confirm that WWE's first-ever WrestleMania, to be held outside North America, will take place in 2027 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He was joined by the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, Turki Alalshikh, and said that the promotion was "proud."
A large section of WWE fans slammed the decision because of problems with travel, money and Saudi Arabia's human rights issues. Most of the blame was thrown at Triple H, who fronted the announcement.
Nash pointed out that the 56-year-old has no say in such a move, as this is up to WWE's parent company, TKO. He said on the Kliq This podcast:
"Paul [Levesque] was getting heat for them (WWE) going to Saudi Arabia. And it’s like… let’s make sure that people understand that my friend's job is he's the head of creative. He's not the business guy that picks the f*cking venues. That's not his job… it's above his pay grade."
WrestleMania has only ever taken place in the United States and Canada, which is why there was so much interest in seeing the biggest pro wrestling event go global. But many envisioned the United Kingdom or another European country as more deserving of hosting the Show of Shows than the Middle Eastern nation.
This might be the most difficult period for Triple H since he took over creative responsibilities from Vince McMahon back in July 2022. A boom period that took WWE into the mainstream in early 2024 has dissipated, with many questioning his booking decisions, but Nash wanted to make clear that those blaming him for WrestleMania heading to Saudi Arabia should be voicing their frustrations with TKO.
Nash might not have much of an argument with some of the creative mishaps that have occurred this year, such as John Cena's heel run, which fell flat. Drew McIntyre and LA Knight haven't been booked well, and some think the excitement of 2024, especially around WrestleMania 40, has fizzled out.
Triple H's issue is that he keeps making promises to fans and using hyperbole to promote shows, but then doesn't deliver. Wrestlepalooza was meant to be one of the year's biggest shows, but it was a letdown. Just this past Monday's RAW was described as 'landscape-changing' , but Logan Paul possibly joining The Vision isn't exactly groundbreaking.
