After putting it off for a while, Kevin Owens has undergone a successful surgery on his neck. It occurred this past week, on July 18, as reported by Fightful Select. ‘The Prizefighter’ detailed the frustrating process leading up to his surgery in an interview with fellow WWE star Cody Rhodes in June. Owens said he was advised to let his spinal cord heal on its own.
The former Universal Champion had previously revealed that he jarred up his neck in a regular match in January this year. The Canadian went on to have a couple of brutal encounters that surprisingly didn’t bother him at all. At the Royal Rumble, the Quebec-born grappler battled Rhodes in a ladder match, which had a gnarly ending for Owens’ neck.
But he didn’t stop there, as the 41-year-old took on Sami Zayn in an unsanctioned match at the Elimination Chamber. The long-time rivals tore the house down, and it was uncomfortable to watch at times. It ended up being Owens’ last WWE match before he got his MRI results in early April that suggested he would need to get off the road and pay due diligence to his banged-up neck.

Owens was lined up for a WrestleMania showdown against Randy Orton. Unfortunately, circumstances led to the Owens unwillingly pulling out of ‘The Show of Shows’. He cut an emotional promo on SmackDown in March to let the fans know about his physical condition. The erstwhile Kevin Steen also claimed that he wasn’t sure if he would ever make it back to continue wrestling.
Now that Kevin Owens has embarked on the road to recovery, the WWE Universe has sent its prayers and well wishes the Canadian’s way. But one can’t pretend optimism, knowing how unrealistic it would be to ask Owens to return anytime soon. Because, per Fightful, ‘The New Face of America’ isn’t expected back in WWE for the entirety of 2025.
Moreover, it’s pretty much in the cards that he will miss WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. If that does happen, it would be the first occurrence of its kind in Owens’ WWE career that he wouldn’t be on a WrestleMania card for the second straight year.
But that doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Owens’ health is a matter of grave concern for those at WWE as well. He’s been an extremely valuable player on the main roster over the last decade or so. For someone who’s never shied from going the extra mile, his championship resume does lag behind the rest.
He hasn’t won a world title in WWE since dropping the Universal strap to Goldberg in 2017. The company’s baffling reluctance to let Owens have a lengthy world title reign has been a major cause of anger for the WWE Universe. He did come close to winning it from Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes in the past three years, but always fell short.
The fans have seen how bitter Randy Orton was toward Kevin Owens during the course of their rivalry before KO got sidelined. However, in real life, ‘The Viper’ is friends with ‘The Prizefighter’, as Orton mentioned in an interview with Denise Salcedo during this year’s Hall of Fame ceremony.
‘The Apex Predator’ started by saying that he respected Owens not only as a wrestler but also for the kind of father and husband he is. Orton revealed that he’d talked to Owens in the meantime and explained how mentally taxing it is for wrestlers to be forced to sit home and not be able to continue doing what they love, which is wrestling.
‘The Legend Killer’ wished KO well and said they will resume from where they left off once Owens gets back. In fact, Orton later went on to set Owens up with a second opinion on his surgery from a surgeon he had worked with while he was out for 18 months.
