Kevin Owens confirmed last week on SmackDown that he needs to take time away for neck surgery. The 40-year-old was in the midst of a phenomenal run, masterfully balancing feuds against Cody Rhodes, Sami Zayn, and Randy Orton, with a blowoff match against the latter scheduled for WrestleMania 41.
The bout was intrinsically canceled, with Owens taking the necessary time off. It's been a week since the gut-wrenching announcement, and there is finally an update on when the Grand Slam Champion might be returning to programming.
According to the latest report from Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp, Owens is due for a lengthy absence. "Those we spoke to in WWE aren't expecting him back in 2025," Sapp wrote. "It's quite possible he misses next year's WrestleMania."

Neck surgeries have various timetables depending on the severity and the natural complications that could result from the procedure. Across the last decade, Daniel Bryan, Edge, and Paige all had a history of neck issues and went into semi-retirement.
Owens is a workhorse for the promotion and has been in plenty of high-profile angles, often lingering around the main event scene. Few performers consistently put on consistently excellent showings in the ring and evoke as much emotion on the mic. He's the total package, and his temporary departure from television leaves a massive void.
When he is able to heal and come back into the fold, he'll almost certainly have to be a pure babyface, as it's difficult to imagine the audience will boo a fan-favorite who was able to overcome such adversity. Hopefully, Owens will be able to make a full recovery.
