Kevin Owens reveals details from his best-case scenario surgery

Kevin Owens hasn't competed in a WWE ring since Feb. 17. He is dealing with a serious neck and spinal cord injury. Currently, there's no guarantee he's able to return to wrestling, and if he does, there's a chance he won't be the same type of wrestler.

For the past few months, Owens has been preparing for a fusion surgery. However, there were multiple variables heading into the procedure, each with its own degree of risk. When speaking with Scotte Sprinkle, Owens provided an update and some additional details surrounding his surgery.

“Yeah, I needed neck fusion," Owens said. h/t to Fightful for the transcription. "It was very stressful going into it because we weren’t really sure how severe the fusion was going to be, how many levels, all this stuff. Thankfully, it ended up only being one level, which is the best-case scenario for something like this. The surgery was successful. I had a great doctor. The thing is, now we have to see how the bones fuse, and there’s no guarantee that it’s going to work. It’s how my body heals; some guys had success, some guys didn’t. Fingers crossed I get to come back to wrestling in the next year, really don’t know though. My goal is to come back, so hopefully that happens.”

Owens has been a staple on the WWE roster for years. He's a fan favorite and an elite in-ring talent. His injury comes at a tough time, as he's been unable to capitalize on WWE's Netflix era thus far. However, his return is months, if not a year, away.

Even when Owens does come back, he will take time to shake the ring rust off. He will need multiple tune-up matches and likely a lighter-than-normal travel schedule. His doctors must also be certain that his body can withstand the impact of elite-level professional wrestling. If not, a return could be off the cards.

Still, as things stand, Owens has every reason to remain optimistic. If his surgery has been a success, and he manages his recovery correctly, there should be a strong chance he resumes his career. Unfortunately, the next few months will be a waiting game. Hopefully, though, WWE fans will get to see "The Prizefighter" back in the ring before too long.
