Earlier this year, Kevin Owens lost the chance to settle his bitter feud with Randy Orton at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. Just weeks before the grand event, the former Universal Champion appeared on SmackDown and, in a rare out-of-character promo, revealed that he had been wrestling through intense neck pain for quite some time. Last month, Owens finally underwent neck fusion surgery to repair the damage.
He recently made his first public appearance since the operation at the NASCAR 2025 Coke Zero Sugar 400 in Daytona, where he provided an update on his recovery (h/t Wrestlezone). The Canadian shared that the procedure went well, but that he’s currently in a waiting period. His goal is to return to the ring within the next year, but there are still many uncertainties.
I needed neck fusion. It was very stressful going into it, because we weren’t really sure how severe the fusion was going to be, how many levels, all this stuff. Thankfully, [the fusion] ended up only being one level, which is the best-case scenario for something like this. But the surgery was successful. I had a great doctor.

Despite the positive surgery outcome, Owens admitted that there’s no clear timeline for his WWE return.
The thing is, now, we have to see how the bones fuse, and there’s no guarantee that it’s gonna work. Some guys had success, some guys didn’t. Fingers crossed, I get to come back to wrestling in the next year. Really don’t know, though. My goal is to come back. Hopefully that’s what happens.

For now, fans will have to wait and hope that Owens’ recovery goes smoothly, giving him the chance to step back into the squared circle in 2026. Owens is one of the most decorated stars in WWE history, a multiple-time champion and even a WrestleMania main eventer.
At WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles, Owens teamed up with Sami Zayn to take on The Usos for the WWE Tag Team Championships. The duo made history that night, ending The Usos’ record-breaking reign and capturing the titles.
In the years that followed, Owens turned heel and entered a heated feud with Cody Rhodes over the WWE Championship, delivering some of the most compelling segments of his career. His next big stop was set to be an epic singles clash with Orton at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. However, due to his neck injury, the match never happened, and ‘The Viper’ instead went on to face Joe Hendry on the grand stage.
While recovering from his recent neck fusion surgery, Kevin Owens has been staying away from the ring. But fans recently got a glimpse of the former Universal Champion at the Daytona International Speedway. A photo of Owens from the event quickly went viral, showing the Canadian star looking noticeably slimmer.
Since he’s been out of action since before WrestleMania 41, the image sparked speculation that fans might see a leaner Owens when he finally returns. The WWE star, however, quickly shut down the buzz with his trademark humor. Taking to X, he joked about his physique and told fans that they need to calm down.
Guys, stop panicking! I’m still fat! Everyone needs to calm down.

Moreover, Owens helped kick off the festivities by revving the engines at the Daytona NASCAR race by revving the engines. Later, he shared how much fun he had and said on social media, “I had a blast meeting everyone there and learning more about NASCAR and everything that goes into these events.” He even made a playful request for next time, asking NASCAR to let him get into the driver’s seat for once.
