WWE Unreal will reportedly be returning for a second season and filming is already taking place with a release date expected next year. Season one of the Netflix docu-series was a commercial success, debuting in the global top 10 with millions of views and hours watched in its first week.
The report comes from Fightful Select, who claim that WWE, Netflix and NFL Films have started production and that the director of season one, Chris Weaver, has been in attendance at "multiple events" to film the series. The project is currently at the stage of deciding which music will be used in the second season, and fans will be intrigued to see which storylines are covered.
One of them will be SummerSlam's 'Ruse of the Century', which saw Seth Rollins cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase on CM Punk to become World Heavyweight Champion after feigning injury. One would assume we will be given a behind-the-scenes look at how the plan came together, who was truly involved, and the responses from WWE talent.
Nikki Bella and Tiffany Stratton praised the angle after Rollins' fake injury came to light but reports had indicated that it didn't go down well with some of the roster. It will be just one of several stories covered in the second season of the Netflix show, which has received mixed reviews.
There have been some entertaining storylines that fans will want to see unravel from a backstage perspective, but also some questionable booking decisions that have riled up fans, such as Brock Lesnar 's return. If Netflix were to truly pull the curtain back and include the Beast's return at SummerSlam, they must also include the backlash that ensued amid the ongoing Vince McMahon lawsuit.
Other storylines include John Cena's decision to turn babyface again, and viewers will be keen to see if The Rock's absence is touched on. AJ Lee's return seems certain if filming is still ongoing, and there is plenty of content for director Weaver to work with.
Gunther retiring Goldberg may be another story for Unreal to delve into, especially since the WCW icon's retirement speech was cut short at Saturday Night's Main Event. The 58-year-old was also unhappy with how his retirement was handled.
