Fresh off retiring Goldberg at Saturday Night’s Main Event, Gunther will get to know his SummerSlam opponent by the end of this Monday night. At the post-event presser of Evolution 2, WWE CCO Triple H announced that CM Punk, LA Knight , Bron Breakker , Penta, and Jey Uso will collide in a Gauntlet match on Raw to determine the No. 1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Since the field is more stacked than ever, it’s tough to single out a definite favorite at this point. However, considering what could suffice as a potential SummerSlam main event bout, Punk vs. Gunther has to be the one. Both men have yet to wrestle each other on the main roster, and what bigger stage than the forthcoming two-night PLE at MetLife Stadium to do so?

Another exciting prospect for ‘The Ring General’ to defend his world title against would be none other than LA Knight. He’s riding high on momentum after dispatching Seth Rollins at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Speaking of which, PWInsider has reported that ‘The Visionary’s’ knee injury isn’t expected to derail any plans for Gunther heading into SummerSlam. WWE had locked in his next challenger prior to SNME.
Gunther’s #SummerSlam plans were already “set in stone” prior to this weekends WWE #SNME show.

Gunther’s storyline for SummerSlam will begin either this week or on next weeks #WWERaw.

The remaining competitors, including Breakker, Penta, and Uso, don’t really pose any threat to the erstwhile Walter in less than three weeks’ time. The Vienna-born wrestler regained the World Heavyweight Championship from ‘The Yeet Master’ last month in a grueling contest. Uso has moved heaven and earth since then to earn a title shot but has fallen miserably.
The writing is on the wall for a potential CM Punk vs. Gunther showdown at SummerSlam. After the Austrian juggernaut beat Goldberg at Saturday Night’s Main Event, he sat down with Sam Roberts and Megan Morant on its recap show. It was brought up that ‘The Best in the World’ shoved ‘The Ring General’ to the ground a couple of weeks ago on Raw.
Gunther said he had taken a note of it and vowed to address that part in the near future. If Punk does emerge victorious in the aforementioned Gauntlet match on tonight’s Raw in Alabama, the former Imperium leader will be left with no choice but to confront ‘The Second City Saint’ about what he was up to when he got physical with the world champ.

“Two weeks ago, there was a lot of people involved. Touched on CM Punk. I know that moment. They will be addressed in the future.”

Ever since his return to WWE in 2023, Punk has not won any title in the company. He had an opportunity to do so at Night of Champions against John Cena . But it wasn’t to be, as Seth Rollins and company played spoilsport for the Chicagoan. Since Rollins is, unfortunately, crippled with a legitimate injury at the moment, one could expect Punk to move on from that feud and instead start a new one.
The big game that Gunther talked about with Goldberg in recent weeks didn’t come across as blatant lies the moment he put ‘The Icon’ to sleep in Atlanta. The former NXT UK Champion kept his word and never looked vulnerable enough to succumb to an upset of massive proportions.
After retiring one legend, he might be on to another. As per WRKD Wrestling, the 37-year-old is expected to be John Cena’s last match opponent in December. It’s something that WWE had in the pipeline for a long time. In fact, at one point, there were even talks of doing this match at WrestleMania 41, but things couldn’t fall into place.
Goldberg isn’t the last person that Gunther hopes to retire.

‘The Cenation Leader’ is currently set to defend his Undisputed WWE title against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam. If his loss to Rhodes eventually turns Cena back into a baby face, he could definitely tell a compelling story with a full-blown bad guy in the form of Gunther. The fans are already excited about their on-screen interactions.
