Matt Cardona deserves a shot with AEW

Life on the independent wrestling scene is grueling. You have to sort out your own travel. You have to promote yourself to bookers and potential fans. And there is no guarantee of where your next paycheck will come from — unless your name is Matt Cardona.

Cardona has become a significant name within the pro wrestling industry. He has mastered the art of self-promotion and social media. He draws a crowd wherever he goes. In recent times, he's been the leading star for Game Changer Wrestling (GCW). Nevertheless, Cardona is a free agent and is available to work for any company he chooses.

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, Cardona could potentially field an offer from Tony Khan following his upcoming match with Chris Jericho.

"There was at least talk of Cardona getting an AEW contract," Meltzer said. "I don't know if it's gonna happen or not, or if he's already agreed. And I guess we'll find out, obviously, if he beats Jericho. Which I don't expect to happen, but if he does, obviously, they won't do it unless he's under contract."

Cardona is a proven commodity. He brings a built-in fanbase wherever he goes. Adding him to the AEW roster could potentially provide the type of ratings boost you hope for when adding a genuine star. If Khan can position Cardona as a genuinely important member of the roster, it could be the perfect match.

After spending the past few years of his career working the independent circuit, Cardona deserves another run with a major brand. His tenure with WWE has long since ended, and his spots on Ring of Honor and AEW have been fleeting. It would be interesting to see how he fares with a legitimate long-term role and angle.

Cardona may prefer the flexibility his free agency provides him. However, if he wants another shot at a major company and to consistently work with the best talent in the world, AEW is the best landing spot for him.
