John Cena irked quite a few WWE fans last month when he professed his love for Vince McMahon despite some of the heinous acts the former WWE chairman has been accused of. When asked about those comments this week, Cena has doubled down on them, defending his "emotional connection" to McMahon.
Us Weekly caught up with Cena who was in attendance during this week's Amazon upfronts. The 17-time WWE Champion acknowledged that there had been backlash to his comments about McMahon in a New York Times profile published in April, but added that hasn't changed his stance.
I’m entitled to have an emotional connection to somebody. I don’t hold anybody or how they feel or what they view as permissible or things that’ll make them angry, happy, excited, sad. That’s their right as a human being.
When asked if Cena was aware of the fan response to those comments, the WWE Superstar added that he wasn't surprised. That probably means he won't be surprised by the second round of fan responses that have been flooding in on social media ever since he doubled down on his love for McMahon.
McMahons got dirt on him— Jedi Hippo ðŸ¦â¤ï¸â€ðŸ”¥ (@JediHippo) May 13, 2025
While some might assume Cena is struggling to separate the friendship he has fostered with McMahon after working under him for two decades, others fear there might be other reasons why the wrestler-turned-movie star continues to defend his former boss. "McMahon's got dirt on him," was one fan's response, while another asked if WWE can just put the title on CM Punk at this point.
Vince was fatherly to many of these men and made many of them into millionaires. You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone that worked for him (not named bret hart) that would say a negative word about him.— VZA. (@VZA_94) May 13, 2025
Not all fans have jumped on Cena for doubling down on his public feelings for McMahon despite the allegations. Some have highlighted that if it weren't for McMahon, Cena wouldn't be where he is today. They note that the same applies to others who have surprisingly been public in sharing their feelings about McMahon, Mick Foley being one of them.
McMahon was accused of paying off former employees to keep quiet about his relationships with them in 2022. The situation escalated significantly when Janel Grant, a former WWE employee, accused McMahon of sexually assaulting and even trafficking her. The lawsuit between McMahon and Grant is ongoing with John Laurinatis, Michael Hayes, and Brock Lesnar now implicated, the latter two named in an amendment to the suit earlier this year.
