A new North American Champion was crowned on Tuesday’s WWE NXT.

Shawn Spears defeated Tony D’Angelo in the show’s main event to win the North American Championship for the first time.

Spears worked over D’Angelo’s back during Tuesday’s main event match, with the storyline back injury playing into the finish. After avoiding a C4 from Spears, D’Angelo went for his pop-up finisher, but his back gave out. Spears then hooked D’Angelo for the cover to win the title.

For Spears, it’s the first title win in a major promotion in his career spanning three different stints with WWE and another with AEW.

D’Angelo held the title for nearly five full months after capturing the gold last October 8 on NXT. After three-plus years on the NXT brand, D’Angelo has a singles title run and two Tag Team title runs to his credit, and could be primed for the main roster post-WrestleMania, but that is purely speculation.
