The third day of NJPW G1 Climax 35 tournament festivities went on in Sendai, with all A Block competitors in action. It was headlined by two eternal foes in Yota Tsuji and Yuya Uemura. Here are the results and stories of the nine-match show:
Yota Tsuji and Yuya Uemura’s match at last year’s G1 was cut short when the latter tore his tricep, which led to his forfeiture of the tournament. This year, there were no injuries, only a superb match between eternal rivals where Tsuji came out on top, putting him at 4 points in the A Block.
This win adds to Tsuji’s lead in their singles match record, which is now up to 18 compared to Uemura’s 12. This was their 52nd encounter, and once again they were able to top their previous battles.
Boltin Oleg proved to the world that his victory over Hiroshi Tanahashi at the G1 play-in tournament was not a fluke. The reigning NEVER Openweight champion did it again, this time in the G1 itself.
Oleg now has back-to-back wins with four points after losing in the tournament opener to Yuya Uemura. Meanwhile, Tanahashi suffered his second straight loss after scoring his first two points with a win over Taichi.
SANADA finally cracked the win column of this year’s tournament after beating his fellow House of Torture member EVIL. This win also ties their singles match record at five victories apiece.
By virtue of this loss, EVIL is now tied with Boltin Oleg, Yota Tsuji, Ryohei Oiwa, and Taichi at four points. Elsewhere on the card, Oiwa defeated Callum Newman, and Taichi won over David Finlay to go up to four points each. SANADA, Newman, Finlay, and Tanahashi all have two points.
In other news, one match got canceled as Gabe Kidd is still unable to wrestle due to an injured knee, which caused him to forfeit his match against Zack Sabre Jr. on day two. Kidd did say that he still wants to continue in the tournament once he is cleared, so his match against Shingo Takagi on day four is still up in the air as this article is being written.
G1 action will continue tomorrow with the B Block competitors facing each other. The show will be headlined by Shota Umino vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
