Any time there's a promotion with a legitimate claim to being the number two behind WWE, there's going to be friction between it and the company that has been far and away the top promotion in the world for almost 30 years. Right now, that number two is AEW, and even though Will Ospreay had a lot of good things to say about WWE recently, he doesn't think there are many at the rival promotion who can hold a candle to what he's capable of in the ring.
Speaking with the Daily Star, a popular newspaper in his homeland, Ospreay noted what WWE does better than AEW and why he admires everybody who works there. However, once he, and most others in AEW, step between the ropes, he believes that WWE simply can't compare (H/T to Fightful for the transcription).
Yeah, you guys are the biggest, you guys draw the bigger houses, you guys got the bigger deals, but the moment the bell rings, I think we’re better than all of them. On my worst day, I’m better than a lot of the guys in-ring.
Ospreay adds that even though he thinks he can go up against almost anyone in WWE when it comes to a comparison of in-ring skills, there are still things he needs to "catch up on" such as his promo skills. The Brit showered CM Punk, in particular, with praise on that front, pointing to his iconic Pipebomb Promo as a standout moment in WWE history when he was otherwise bored with what the company was putting out there at the time.
Ospreay says that he watched WWE as a kid, but it wasn't the company that got him into wrestling; it was a select group of its Superstars. Edge, Eddie Guerrero, and Randy Orton all got shoutouts in the interview, indicating that the period Ospreay is referencing is likely the early to mid-2000s.
Even though Ospreay was almost equal parts positive and negative towards WWE, it seems likely his comments will spark reactions from certain people, particularly the negative ones. If I were to put money on it, Seth Rollins seems the most likely WWE Superstar to issue a retort. Rollins and Ospreay engaged in a war of words prior to the latter signing with AEW, arguing over which of them was closest to being the best wrestler in the world today. There was a chance Ospreay might have signed with WWE at that time, but now he's with AEW, and following the comments he made about WWE in the interview above, the former International Champion has never felt further from working under Triple H.
