The WWE’s move to Netflix has ushered in a new era of professional wrestling, but according thePaul Heyman, it’s not just about bigger matches and a broader audience. The company is leaning heavily into a trend that has taken over with the changes that come from being on Netflix. More specifically, appealing to a younger audience, and one way to do that is through hidden easter eggs and conspiracy theories that allow the WWE Universe to get interactive.
As per a story by The Hollywood Reporter, Paul Heyman, the mastermind behind many of WWE’s biggest storylines, recently admitted that he intentionally drops easter eggs into WWE programming. The idea is to get fans talking.
“I openly invite easter eggs and conspiracy theories in every scene that we do, and we intentionally drop them in there, so that people pick up on it and then develop their own conspiracy theories as to which way the story can go."
Heyman revealed that the hope is that things go viral, which in today's landscape is as important as ratings.
If fans catch on to the Easter Eggs, either via TikTok, Instagram, podcasts, or YouTube videos, the WWE is betting that it will lead to more people logging into Netflix to watch Raw or SmackDown.
One example is the upcoming WWE 2K25 video game cover. One of the covers features Roman Reigns with Paul Heyman watching over him. Some fans are questioning why Heyman was included in such a prominent way. For fans who saw Raw this week, there was a major development in the Reigns and Heyman dynamic, as Heyman was caught in the role of checking on the health of CM Punk. Reigns clearly was irate over it and destroyed Punk to end the show.
What is happening is exactly what WWE is hoping will happen. Fans are rewatching promos and segments for hidden details. The smallest gesture, a subtle facial expression, the words spoken that might not have been impactful at first, or even the placement of a championship belt or the likeness of Finn Balor's The Demon King in the background can set off wild theories.
By dropping easter eggs into their shows, they’re creating an experience that extends far beyond the two hours and change that fans are tuned in to watch. The more fans dissect and theorize, the more hype is built for future episodes.
