Matt Cardona made a shock return to WWE on SmackDown two weeks ago after participating in John Cena's Last Time is Now tournament in November. Previously known as Zack Ryder during his first run with the company, he has now rejoined with his Cardona gimmick.

The 40-year-old is now a member of the SmackDown roster, and his return fuelled talk of another former WWE star also heading back to the promotion. But that doesn't look likel,y given an announcement he gave on Thursday (January 15th).

Ex-WWE Star Nic Nemeth Signs New Deal

Nic Nemeth was also a participant in the Last Time is Now tournament, and he received a massive pop from the crowd before losing to Solo Sikoa. His appearance saw him return as Dolph Ziggler, a gimmick he ditched after his WWE release in September 2023.

The former WWE World Heavyweight Champion has found success in TNA, holding the TNA World Championship. But Cardona's return to WWE sparked speculation about Nemeth's future, with questions over whether he'd re-sign with TNA or follow his close friend back to the biggest wrestling promotion in the world.

Nemeth revealed that he has indeed signed a new deal with TNA and that he loves being part of the company. He said on Busted Open Radio:

"It's official and it's exclusive to the Busted Open brand. I've had a great relationship (with TNA), I've (had a) handshake deal since I came in the door with TNA and wouldn't go anywhere else. I love it, the work that everybodys put in. The whole front of the show, the front office, a president leading by example, Tommy and Hunter behind the scenes. I am happy to be with TNA, my contract is signed."

Nemeth will be part of TNA's debut on the AMC Network tonight, and it's set to be a historic show with huge matches booked. WWE star AJ Styles, who is one of the biggest stars in the promotion's history, will also be making an appearance in Dallas, Texas.

The TNA World Heavyweight Championship will also be on the line when Frankie Kazarian defends his title against former champion Mike Santana. Nemeth can be expected to appear on the show which airs live at 9/8c from the Curtis Culwell Center.

Nemeth's New Deal Doesn't Rule Out WWE Appearances

While Nemeth will be remaining with TNA for the long run, it doesn't mean he can't make a rare appearance on WWE TV. TNA and WWE have been in a partnership since January 2025, which has seen plenty of talent from both promotions crossover.

Nemeth's appearance in the Last Time is Now tournament occurred while he was under contract to TNA. An invasion storyline between TNA and NXT took place back in October, culminating in a special 'Showdown' show.

This partnership could be used by WWE when booking the Royal Rumble, as fans expect to see surprises. There's a chance some TNA stars get showcased in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, including TNA X-Division Champion Leon Slater.
