This week’s edition of WWE Monday Night Raw was the last one before Wrestlepalooza this Saturday at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Championship storylines, face-to-face segments, and much more, in this opinionated recap.
This episode of Raw opened with John Cena cutting an in-ring promo. After 14 minutes of airtime, he finally got to the first point of the evening, Brock Lesnar’s return. The speech was a generic spiel full of catch-phrases. The two will face off this Saturday at Wrestlepalooza.

The first match of Raw featured Lyra Valkyria and Roxanne Perez. The match had a quick pace and smooth reversals; however, it all looked relatively soft and did not feature a believable false finish. Valkyria picked up the pinfall victory, only to be attacked by her challenger and Raquelle Rodriguez. Bayley’s music hit as she came to even the odds, as she continues to tease a new, schizoid gimmick.

Kofi Kingston versus Penta was the next contest. This one had a bit of everything, including pace, reversals, high spots, and physicality. Despite the interference from Xavier Woods and Big G, the luchadore fought them off the apron before hitting a Mexican destroyer for the victory.
Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch, who are wasting two titles for a couple versus couple, nostalgia-filled storyline, called their upcoming opponents to the ring. The two couples babbled on for an extended promo without much substance. This went on for so long that it was a difficult watch. The segment ended with the duo of champions pulling one over on CM Punk, who left the ring to chase Rollins. This left AJ Lee prime for the picking.

The next match was El Grande Americano versus Dragon Lee, and it was easily the best of the evening. Both men have the elite ability to execute high spots without losing any intensity. The reversals from both masked men were top-notch. Americano had the assistance of two others dressed as him, who helped in the greasy finish to the otherwise classic match.
Stephanie Vaquer versus Kairi Sane was next. The two started with some chain-grappling that got no pop from the crowd, going highly underrated. They had smooth reversals, but the match still lacked any believable false finishes. This segment was to set up La Premiera versus Iyo Sky for the vacant title at Wrestlepalooza.
The main event was a tag match, with LA Knight and Jimmy Uso taking on Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker. It was a physical, back-and-forth match, but it was odd to see WWE book the heels for the clean victory. Jey Uso saved his brother from further damage before LA Knight executed his finisher on him to end the show.
WWE is falling into a pattern of over-reliance on nostalgia acts. Wrestlepalooza features a failed heel run of Cena, just for a one-off with Lesnar. There is also never a need for a mixed-tag match on a PLE, never mind the fact that it hoards two championships without any of the implications.
