Rockingham Speedway up for sale after successful NASCAR return

Following the successful return of the NASCAR Truck and Xfinity Series to Rockingham Speedway, the track is up for sale. This isn’t a bad thing for the track. It looks to simply be the next step in the track’s revival.

With millions in upgrades over the year, Rockingham Speedway is another revived racetrack. Most of the money that went into the track came through the state government as part of the COVID-19 pandemic stimulus package in 2021, a similar situation to North Wilkesboro.

The open offer period is now active. Dan Lovenheim, the current owner of Rockingham Speedway, says that a new owner will be selected on July 1. Lovenheim says that the success of the sold-out Xfinity Race earlier this season had no effect on whether to sell or not. Though it doesn’t hurt.

“We’ve basically taken it in first gear as far as we can go, building it out, getting it ready for bigger and better hands,” Lovenheim said to The Charlotte Observer. “And the time is right to pass the baton to someone who can take it farther than we can.”

The CBRE Group, which is listing the property, states in the offering memorandum that more upgrades are likely on the way. Ultimately, the plan is to secure a Cup Series race for 2026 or 2027.

Rockingham Speedway has done well beyond the one NASCAR race weekend. The facility has been set up to host numerous events and has had success in those endeavours.

This is the next step for The Rock. Will Speedway Motorsports or NASCAR end up purchasing the track for themselves? That remains to be seen.

Rockingham Speedway put on a heck of a show

In both the NASCAR Truck Series and Xfinity Series earlier this season, fans were treated to great racing at Rockingham. While the track has been repaved to cover up the old, cracked asphalt from years past, it retains many of its characteristics.

Kasey Kahne made his return to NASCAR racing in the Xfinity Series race. He had trouble, but with a damaged car, he did the most with what he had. The Truck Series race ended with multiple drivers running out of fuel, and Tyler Ankrum broke a 5 year dry spell to get his second career win.

The Xfinity Series was fantastic. However, winner Jesse Love was disqualified after putting on a great performance to take the lead and win the race. A sold-out crowd went wild for the racing on Easter Weekend.

NASCAR returned to North Wilkesboro in 2023 and has hosted the All-Star Race there three years in a row now. This season, NASCAR updated the facility at Bowman Gray Stadium to host the Clash. Could the Cup Series be returning to The Rock soon as well?
