When beginning their professional wrestling careers, the desire to rise to stardom and win championships is at the forefront of most performers’ minds. Whether intentional or not, the feat of winning all titles and therefore becoming a WWE Grand Slam Champion is one of the greatest accomplishments a WWE wrestler can achieve.
To be crowned in the modern era as a Grand Slam Champion for the men’s roster, each of the four titles must have been held: a World Championship (WWE, Universal, or World Heavyweight), the Intercontinental Championship, the United States Championship, and the World Tag Team or WWE Tag Team Championship.
Since the criteria were revised in 2015 to exclude retired title belts, a surprising number of men have achieved this feat. Let’s examine the most recent five who have attained this tremendous accomplishment.
Oscar Gutierrez Rubio, better known as Rey Mysterio Jr., began his wrestling career at the age of 14 under the guiding hand of his uncle, Rey Misterio Sr., in his home country of Mexico. His mastery of the lucha libre style of wrestling caught the attention of Paul Heyman, who invited him to sign with ECW in 1995.
Mysterio landed in WCW a year later, where he would spend the next five years gaining popularity with fans before the company was sold to WWE. He made his WWE debut on July 25, 2002, defeating Chavo Guerrero in a highly competitive matchup. It was in his debut that fans quickly discovered how high-flying and highly entertaining Mysterio was.
“The Ultimate Underdog” would win his first championship as a Tag Team champion alongside Edge on November 5, 2002, quickly rising through the ranks before becoming the smallest World Champion in WWE history after defeating Randy Orton at WrestleMania 22 in 2006. His long-awaited moment of becoming a Grand Slam Champion occurred on May 19, 2019, defeating Samoa Joe for the United States Championship at Money in the Bank.
Mysterio has won a total of 16 WWE championships in his career, including a Tag Team Championship victory with his son, Dominik, making them the first-ever father-son duo to achieve this accomplishment. His incredible career to date earned him induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023.
