The Next Victims of the WWE 'Career-Killer' Gunther

Ever since Gunther defeated John Cena at the end of his retirement tour, he has been on a path of ending wrestling veterans’ careers. Recently, Gunther put another career to bed by beating AJ Styles, forcing him to retire. Now that Styles is out of Gunther’s mind, he has set his sights on something grander. This upcoming RAW, he has the opportunity to qualify for the Men’s Elimination Chamber Match.

The winner of that match will challenge the Undisputed WWE Champion at WrestleMania. The year 2026 is beyond promising for Gunther. Now that he’s billed as “The Career Killer”, there will be more victims added to his career-ending list. Here are the next possible victims of Gunther.

Rey Mysterio

The RAW after the Royal Rumble, Gunther came to the ring, gloating arrogantly about retiring AJ Styles. Gunther’s celebration ended shortly when Styles’ former tag team partner, Dragon Lee, gave “The Ring General” a piece of his mind. Lee tried to stand up to Gunther by attacking him, only to fall short by being put to sleep by Gunther.

This could set up a feud between Gunther and Rey Mysterio, as Dragon Lee is a member of Mysterio’s stable, the LWO. Although WrestleMania is still a little over two months away, WWE can plant seeds for the time being. The planting of the seeds can begin after Elimination Chamber, where Gunther can have a match with Lee.

After Gunther dominates Lee, Penta can step up to Gunther. Much like Lee, Penta can also have a match with Gunther on RAW, where Gunther picks up the win.

With Gunther likely beating Lee and Penta, this can prompt Rey Mysterio to come out to challenge Gunther as well. Gunther’s cockiness and brashness could lead him to accept Mysterio’s challenge, but at WrestleMania. Gunther explains by wanting Mysterio to put his career on the line, and Gunther may feel that there’s no better place to retire Mysterio than WWE’s biggest event, possibly.

Jey Uso

If there is someone that Gunther can erase from his mind, it’s Jey Uso. Last year, Gunther and Uso collided for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania. Jey pulled a shocking upset by making Gunther tap out. Since then, fans would chant “You Tapped Out” to the “The Ring General”. No matter how many times Gunther ignores the chants, they will always follow him. Although Gunther regained the title from Jey last summer, he can still get another crack at Jey.

Instead of having a match where, if his opponent loses, they retire, Gunther and Jey can go at it in a simple one-on-one bout. The two can wrestle on an episode of RAW, where Gunther feels the need to solidify himself. The chances of beating Jey again would be huge for Gunther as he is on the run of his career.

Sheamus

If there is someone who is considered a “wrestling soulmate” for Gunther, it has to be Sheamus. Every time these two technical wrestlers step in the ring, they never fail to pull an all-time classic for the fans. Even though Sheamus is currently out with a shoulder injury, he’ll eventually make his return soon. Hopefully, WWE can have these two renew their rivalry. When it comes to singles matches, Sheamus has lost to Gunther three times.

If WWE goes with Gunther feuding with Sheamus, there can be a brief feud in June. To have this feud escalate, Sheamus should put his career on the line. Sheamus has a heavy desire to beat Gunther. He could be willing to defend his career if he fails to defeat him for the fourth time.

If this proposed match were to occur at a PLE Event in June, it would be a full-circle moment for Sheamus. It was in June 2009 that Sheamus made his debut on the WWE main roster. For Sheamus to start and possibly end his career at the same time frame would be a nice touch for “The Celtic Warrior”.

Brock Lesnar

A match between Brock Lesnar and Gunther is bound to happen in WWE. In fact, these two behemoths had a memorable face-off in the 2023 Royal Rumble Match. This may be the year where Lesnar and Gunther can finally have their match. This summer, WWE is having SummerSlam at Lesnar’s hometown in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

If WWE goes with this route, they can build this as Lesnar’s retirement match. They can also have this match headline SummerSlam as well.

It would be an interesting feud to see as Lesnar would be built as a babyface, which is uncommon since he was a monster heel for most of his career. Much like other stars who fell to “The Ring General,” it would be Lesnar staring Gunther off face-to-face, signaling a challenge.

Gunther possibly going over Lesnar would be a huge accolade. Much like Gunther himself, Lesnar also lost to only a handful of wrestlers throughout his run in WWE. A match of this caliber could determine who is the more dominant wrestler.
