There is much to unpack when thinking about the road to WrestleMania 42. At Elimination Chamber, Undisputed WWE Champion Drew McIntyre made his presence felt by costing Cody Rhodes another shot at a title match for WrestleMania. Randy Orton instead came out victorious and will now receive his championship opportunity.

Due to McIntyre’s constant involvement in big-caliber matches, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis made an executive decision. This upcoming SmackDown, McIntyre will defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Rhodes. The winner will not only be crowned champion, but will also put the title on the line against Orton at WrestleMania. There are so many ways WWE can determine Orton’s opponent, but there is one rightful choice.

Cody Rhodes should go against Randy Orton at WrestleMania

The best option for WWE in deciding who should defend the Undisputed WWE Title against Randy Orton at WrestleMania is Cody Rhodes. McIntyre doesn’t need to feud with Orton heading into WrestleMania, as both men have already feuded a lot last summer. For a long time, there has been so much anticipation for a Rhodes and Orton rivalry. There are so many ways WWE could go with this route.

If Rhodes wins the title on SmackDown, it will close the door for his feud with McIntyre and start a new one. For McIntyre, he can resume his feud with Jacob Fatu. Those two can have a match at WrestleMania of their own. It would be interesting to see how this potential match between Rhodes and Orton would finish.

With WrestleMania approaching in a month and a half, WWE can build momentum for these two. Rhodes can add more wins under his belt as he’s been losing quite recently.

For Orton, he can avenge the loss he suffered to Aleister Black a few weeks ago. Black has been pushing for Orton to become the sinister individual he once was. What if Orton’s small program with Black is a signal that something big will come at WrestleMania?

Pull the trigger on a heel turn

Every time Rhodes and Orton have faced each other recently, there has been a similar finish. Both men don’t hesitate when getting the upper hand on one another. At first, Orton had hesitation at Night of Champions last summer. Orton didn’t want to take advantage of using the exposed turnbuckle to defeat Rhodes.

Instead, it was Rhodes who ended up capitalizing by using the exposed turnbuckle to beat Orton and become King of the Ring. This left a huge chip on Orton’s shoulder as Rhodes went on to receive his championship match.

This time at Elimination Chamber, Orton delivered an RKO on a distracted Rhodes to become the number one contender. Now that both men have gained the upper hand, there may be another moment at WrestleMania. What if the match concludes with a heel turn? It would be a win-win situation on both sides. Orton can cement his heel turn by low-blowing Rhodes, following with an RKO, taking a shortcut to get the win.

Seeing Orton turn heel to become champion, possibly, would leave the fans in Vegas happy as they might witness Orton achieving his 15th championship. It would also be a good way to make sure Rhodes is not the Undisputed WWE Champion for the time being.
