  • The Rock wanted Cody Rhodes to turn heel for WrestleMania 41 build, but plans changed.
  • Rhodes rejected heel turn proposal supported by WWE, see him as top babyface.
  • WWE pivoted to have John Cena turn heel instead, fans rallying behind Rhodes.

An interesting bit of news has surfaced regarding one of the biggest heel turns in the history of the professional wrestling industry. Despite how well the John Cena turn has been received, it wasn't Cena that The Rock originally wanted to turn. He had another person in mind.

The Rock Wanted Cody Rhodes To Turn Heel

According to Wrestling Observer, The Rock originally pitched an idea that would have seen Cody Rhodes turn heel as part of the WrestleMania 41 build. However, both because Rhodes felt it wasn't the best decision to turn him, and when it became clear that The Rock would not be able to wrestle at the event, plans shifted.

WWE and The Rock moved to turn John Cena's heel.

Rhodes was offered the opportunity to become a heel when The Rock wanted his soul. He ultimately rejected the heel turn proposal, which was reportedly supported by WWE higher-ups who believed such a turn could have hurt the company’s current momentum.

WWE officials see Rhodes as the company’s top babyface, and they believe the fans are behind him as the squeaky-clean underdog good guy. He is also a major merchandise seller, and that is very much considered when a big decision is made.

Why Rhodes Turning Heel Would Have Been a Risky Move

Rhodes’ current run has resonated deeply with fans. He addressed how similar he is to the old Cena on SmackDown this week, and the WWE Universe rallied behind his emotional journey when he battled Roman Reigns. He is also beloved for taking a risk with his career when he left WWE, helped build AEW, and then returned to become a bigger star than he'd ever been before. He has believed in himself throughout his career, and a sudden heel turn where he sold his soul would have been taking away everything he's done to get to this point in his career.

WWE pivoted to Cena and it worked. His turn during his retirement tour came as a massive shock. That he aligned with The Rock and ditched all of the kids and fans who stuck with him was the ultimate showing of disrespect. It stood against his manta of Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect.

WWE is in a rare position where fans are genuinely behind their top babyface. Now, they can get into the idea that the one person they never thought would turn heel has, and there is so much creativity to explore.
