The Rock To Cody Rhodes: ‘Our Story Has Just Begun’
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

If WrestleMania XL Night 2 didn’t make your eyes water when Cody Rhodes won the title by beating Roman Reigns, then the RAW after WrestleMania certainly did. Triple H came out to warm up the record-setting crowd of 20,248 in Philadelphia, PA. There was no question the crowd was hot for the most anticipated RAW show each year after WrestleMania, but last night felt more like an ECW crowd than anything else. They were loud and vulgar, and their energy levels were undeniable. Triple H felt it and took it in for about ten minutes before even saying the first words of the night.

Once Triple H started, the crowd settled, and he brought out the new undisputed champion Cody Rhodes. The crowd went wild, and Rhodes took a few minutes to take it all in. Although not mentioned initially, the show was commercial-free for the first hour to nail the story they wanted to tell. Triple H would hug Rhodes again, whisper something in his ear, and take a moment to congratulate him again on his accomplishment.

Triple H then brought out some TV screens as the jumbotron was removed to accommodate the crowd. He would play a tribute video for Rhodes, which showed his road to glory and included pictures with Kenny Omega , Chris Jericho, and the Young Bucks. This Triple H era isn’t afraid to do that, especially if it means telling the story correctly. Rhodes got emotional, and after the video was over, he hugged Triple H and showed off his emotions to the crowd.

Rhodes would place the belt in the center of the ring and kiss it. He would then go into his “What you want to talk about” schtick and cut his promo. Towards the end, The Rock’s music hit, and the place went absolutely crazy. The Rock walked into the ring, and it seemed like forever before the crowd allowed him to speak. It was reminiscent of the reaction Dominique Mysterio would get before speaking but four times as loud. The Rock, with his “People’s Title” over his shoulder, started to cut his promo still as a heel but a calm one.

The Rock congratulated Rhodes on his accomplishment and even said that his father, Dusty, was watching with pride from above. Then, in a weird turn of events, The Rock asked to hold Rhodes’ title, which Rhodes agreed to, but only if he could have The Rock’s. They slowly exchanged the titles, with The Rock almost feeling the power of once again holding the WWE strap he held many years ago. After exchanging titles back, the Rock would validate what was widely reported: that he’s going to step away for a little while (to film a movie). Before ending his promo, The Rock told Cody Rhodes, “Our story has just begun,” which the fans loved. The potential match between The Rock and Cody Rhodes would be a mega event that could land at Summer Slam on August 4.

Before leaving the ring, The Rock told Rhodes he had something to give him and assured him there would be no fireworks. The Rock placed something in Rhodes’ hand and told him, “You don’t even have to open your hand to know what this is. Don’t you ever break my heart again. If you smell what the Final Boss is cookin’.” The Rock left the ring, and Rhodes had a confused look on his face, clutching to whatever it was he had in his pocket that was given to him by The Rock.

What does this all mean? It means that the new storyline between The Rock & Cody Rhodes is off to a fantastic start, and the mystery behind what he gave him is enough to hold fans over until The Rock returns after shooting his film. The storytelling doesn’t get any better than this. How the WWE will fill the time in between and who Rhodes will feud with still hasn’t been determined, but we may not have to wait long to find out as Cody Rhodes will likely appear on Smackdown this Friday, which should set off his next storyline.
