WWE officials are reportedly admirers of TNA X Division Champion Leon Slater, who has made appearances on NXT in recent months. Slater has struck up an on-screen alliance with NXT's biggest prospect Je'Von Evans, but they also collided at TNA Bound For Glory last month.
Slater is one of TNA's most promising stars, who was used as part of the NXT and TNA Showdown storyline. He was on the winning team in a four-on-four Survivor Series-style elimination match at the special event on October 7th.
Five days later, he tore the house down with Evans at BFG with the X Division Championship on the line, although there was no victor after DarkState controversially interfered. They continue to feature as a team on Tuesday nights as WWE's partnership with TNA continues.
The 21-year-old has seemingly emerged as one of WWE's higher-ups' favorites from TNA, as was the case with Jordynne Grace, who signed with the company last year, and Joe Hendry, who made his WrestleMania debut earlier this year. The Englishman's stock is continuing to grow, and so too is interest in him.
Fightful Select reports that Slater is "well-liked" within WWE and has made a good impression backstage and while working with NXT stars. His current deal with TNA is thought to be up next year, which could be an opportune time for chief content officer Triple H and coach and producer Shawn Michaels to try and sign him.
The relationship with TNA will make that possibility a more straightforward process, as was the case with Grace, there is an understanding when one of the promotion's top talents is eyed by WWE. He will likely continue to feature on NXT, but could be one to watch regarding a potential long-term future with the company.
WWE could use John Cena's Last Time is Now tournament to help put eyes on Leon Slater, who has yet to appear on the main roster. Superstars from RAW, SmackDown and NXT will be competing in the 16-man tournament, where the winner faces Cena in his final match at Saturday Night's Main Event on December 13th.
Cena also announced that some faces from outside WWE are to take part, which likely means using the TNA partnership. Matt Cardona (formerly Zack Ryder in WWE) makes sense, but perhaps Slater could be a possible participant to help a larger audience get a glimpse of the high-flyer.
That could start on SmackDown next Friday (November 14th) as Nick Aldis announced LA Knight will face a surprise opponent. The Brit has already made clear he wants to face AJ Styles before he retires next year.
