Mick Foley has become the latest former WWE star to make the jump over to AEW.
Tony Khan’s promotion is set to host one of its landmark pay-per-views, Double or Nothing, this Sunday, and the former wrestler will make an appearance.
Foley will be a co-host of the Buy In show with Renee Paquette, but Khan has now suggested that the 60-year-old will have a role in helping talent and coming up with ideas for the product moving forward.
Foley would bring a wealth of experience to AEW, having been positioned as a main attraction during WWE’s Attitude Era.
Working with such a legend will no doubt excite many wrestlers, and Khan himself seems thrilled about striking a deal for Mankind.
Speaking at the pre-Double or Nothing media call, as per Fightful’s YouTube channel, he said: “Right now he’s working as an on-air host but I also think with Mick Foley, he’s a brilliant wrestling mind. He’s gonna bring insights and ideas and he’s going to work with the wrestlers and have ideas for the show. So I hope he’ll contribute in a number of ways.
“I know he’s interested in helping out in every way he can, including as an ambassador, doing media, hosting the shows. He will be at all the pay-per-views and sometimes at TV too. Not at every show, but at some of the events and always at the pay-per-views for the most part.
“He’s going to be at a lot of the upcoming events, for sure. So I’m very excited to have Mick joining us in AEW and being a part of the team, and I’m sure there’s a number of different ways he’ll have ideas and things he can do to contribute.”
Foley, who put his body on the line with a number of dangerous spots during the Attitude Era and beyond, has not wrestled in WWE for over a decade.
His last in-ring appearance came at the 2012 Royal Rumble, featuring as the seventh entrant before being eliminated by Cody Rhodes.
14 years later, fellow AEW talent Jim Ross has now commented on a potential match for Foley in the company, but played down the idea of a full in-ring fight.
Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, Ross said: “I could see him throwing a few punches or getting somebody in the Mandible Claw. Stuff like that.
“But him working a complete match? I find that to be doubtful. Maybe it will happen. I’m not doubting it, I don’t think it’s a bad idea if it’s done right.
“You’ve got to treat Mick very, very special, and put him in situations that he can pull off, that he’s good at. But I can’t see him having Mick Foley on TV, and somewhere along the way not using him for a little bit of physicality. I think that will happen.”
