The Royal Rumble was full of twists and turns last Saturday as Roman Reigns and Liv Morgan booked their place at WrestleMania 42 and AJ Styles retired. It was a night of highs and lows and ended with the OTC pointing to the Mania sign after winning the Rumble for the second time in his career.
Reigns will challenge CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship at Mania, meaning Drew McIntyre's challenger for the Undisputed WWE Championship has yet to be determined. The Scot successfully defended the title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, defeating Sami Zayn in a largely one-sided affair.
Zayn was the fan favorite in that match, and many were backing him to win a world title for the first time in his WWE career. That includes himself, amid a report from Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer Radio.
Meltzer claims that, until the day of the PLE, discussions were held over who should win the match between McIntyre and Zayn. The latter was "pushing for it," but Paul 'Triple H' Levesque decided against it.
Zayn headed into his match against McIntyre as the underdog and their storyline was built on the former United States Champion having constantly failed to defeat the Scottish Warrior. But there was to be no fairytale story for Zayn, who lost clean to McIntyre, and it appears that his quest to become a world champion is over.
Even though Triple H didn't feel that the Rumble was the right time for Zayn to become world champion, it should be on the cards this year. He is one of the most beloved babyfaces in the company and fans are clearly supporting him in his goal to win the big gold.
With WrestleMania on the horizon, it would have been surprising to see the title change hands, especially since McIntyre only became champion in early January. It appears he will continue to feud with Cody Rhodes, and they might square off at Mania, although Jacob Fatu is reportedly under consideration to be added to a potential title match.
It will be interesting to see where Zayn goes from here because the last remaining ambition from his character's standpoint is to become world champion. WWE should continue to push him in and around the main event scene and eventually hand him the biggest win of his career at some stage.
